 NCFN's $10,000 Make-over!

NCFN new playroom
Children cut the ribbon on a brand new, developmentally enriching playroom at Northwest Church and Family Network this Monday, thanks to volunteers from a Bright Horizons child care center in Alexandria, VA. What a difference they made!

Here are some reports from the scene:

"It's wonderful!" - first grader showing his sister the reading corner

"This is tight! It's 100% better and safer for the babies." - 12-year old dressed up as a doctor

"Finally, the kids have a real place they can be proud of!" - Father watching kids play in the kitchen

"The kids are so absorbed in the activities at their fingertips, they don't even notice us!" - Volunteer supervising a matchbox car highway being built

The new room uses all the top classroom techniques to divide the room by age groups, with a baby and toddler corner, a reading nook (with solar system stickers on the ceiling!), an arts and crafts station, and a Wii and board game lounge for older kids.

Thank you Bright Horizons for making this possible and to the very skilled NCFN volunteers for all that they do each week!

 Teen Night Begins!

Teens Enthusiastic About Pizza (among other things)

Seven teenagers showed up to the first Teen Night at DC General this Wednesday, ready to eat pizza, get to know each other and play games.

They played icebreaker games and asked each other questions, came up with a set of rules for the group and ideas for what they want out of the program. Plans include homework help and creating incentives, monthly field trips to get out of the shelter, activities and special visitors.

We are thrilled that teens at DC General now have a safe place to go! We need more weekly volunteers in order to reach more teens, so please email Andy.hcpp@gmail.com if you are committed to working with teenagers!

Volunteers Needed as Shelters Fill Up!

Halloween is almost here!
Halloween is a big deal at Playtime, where parties give families a chance to kick back and we provide costumes for every child so that they don't have to worry about being without one at school!

You can help make Halloween memorable this year for more than 80 children:

 1. Collect new or gently used costumes and bring them to us by Oct.14th (or you can bring them to the Fall Fundraiser on Oct. 16th)!

2. Come join us at a Halloween Party! Help throw a party for the kids, lead a carnival station, and donate $20-$30 through Fannie Mae's Foundation to help us win a $5,000 bonus that will last all year!
