National Tap Dance Day Celebration @ KOW ...

Calling All Tappers!   Knock On Wood tap class
In celebration of National Tap Dance Day, KOW proudly presents NTDD Tap Celebration '08. Come to the studio Sunday, May 25, 2008 from 2-4 pm and join in the fun! Bring a CD, show off your stuff (4 minutes maximum), meet fellow tappers, and let's celebrate this wonderful day together. All levels, all ages, all tappers are welcome. Cover charge is $5.

2008 Tap Shoe Swap Meet:
Reuse, Recycle, Rejoice!
Need new tap shoes? Have an old pair you want to get rid of? Here's your chance to donate your old tap shoes, or get an "already broken in" pair to grow into! During the week of May 24-31, we will have our current stock of used tap shoes on display. For a small donation, you can "adopt" a pair. OR bring in your old tap shoes (in good condition of course) and swap them for a different "warmed up" pair! National Tap Dance Day is May 25th. What better way to celebrate than by taking home a pair of "pre-loved" tap shoes?!!!

Remember Dance Is The Answer, a great week of free events, April 25 to May 4. Activities at Knock On Wood include Visitors' Week (April 28-May 3), and an Open House on May 4 from 2-4 pm, where you can attend a free (fun!) tap improvisation class, Jammin' Without Jitters, open to all ages and skill levels.

"Dancin' Days" Summer Camps are open for registration. The camps will run July 21-25 and August 4-8; full-day sessions for ages 7-12, plus a half-day option for ages 4-6. Both weeks are half-full already, so don't delay!

Jump Rhythm Jazz Project will be at Knock On Wood in July for some very special activities this summer: a Teen Tap Intensive (July 14-18) and 2 Master Classes (July 19). These are fantasically exciting opportunities for kids (ages 11 & up) and adults. Check them out!

TWA ALUMS - WHERE ARE THEY NOW?  Baakari Wilder

CLICK 'N CLACK, the TAP-IT SISTERS - Trivia Corner

May Birthday Boy with Million Dollar Legs

As a child, this legendary tap dancer/actor and his sister Adele studied ballet, ballroom, toe dancing and tap. In 1905, they made their vaudeville debut as a miniature bride and groom, and began touring in an act called "Juvenile Artists Presenting an Electric Musical Toe-Dancing Novelty." Adele sparked but her brother was an awkward youngster and the act fell apart. They returned to the stage 2 years later; Adele retired in 1932, but her brother went on to Hollywood where he found his own style and successfully appeared in many movies with several famous dance partners. The evaluation of his first screen test was: "Can't act. Can't sing. Balding. Can dance a little." He used his ballet and ballroom training in his tap choreography and was considered by other tap dancers as poised, charming, nonchalant, graceful, elegant and a "man of class." He was one of the first Kennedy Center Honorees in 1978 and was inducted into the International Tap Dance Hall of Fame in 2002.

QUESTION: Who was this legendary tapper whose legs were insured for one million dollars?

LAST MONTH'S QUESTION: Whose "sweet feet" made Lena Horne say, "He was my Fred Astaire?" Ms. Horne continued, "Honi makes butterflies look clumsy." Charles "Honi" Coles died on November 12, 1992.
