1-3 p.m. Bradley Temple Children (ages 4-12) are invited to this safety class to learn about basic bicycle skills. Participants will practice starting and stopping, the safe way to exit a driveway, how to look for traffic and other safety precautions. Please bring a bicycle, helmet and a parent or guardian to sign the permission slip.

Local farmers will sell fresh produce, honey, herbs, teas and homemade baked goods. This year, Farmers' Market bags are available for a reduced price of $2 at the Lakeside Association Office.
Wittenberg University Event Tuesday, July 12 3 p.m. Coffee & Cream Wittenberg University alumni, students, families, faculty and friends are invited to an event at Coffee & Cream. Family Picnic in the Park

All are welcome to feast on hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad, chips, watermelon, lemonade and cookies. Food, drinks and place settings are provided. Bring a blanket or lawn chair. There is no charge, but a $3 donation is suggested to help offset the cost. In the event of rain, the picnic is cancelled.

Orchestra Hall Movie Theatre
Orchestra Hall enjoys the distinction of being the only movie theater on the Marblehead Peninsula, as well as in all of Ottawa County. Enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of Orchestra Hall, watching first-run flicks and classic favorites.
Orchestra Hall has been updated with Dolby Stereo Sound, a brand new movie screen, and the two original projectors have been rebuilt.

The C. Kirk Rhein, Jr., Center for the Living Arts holds an open house from 1-3 p.m. every Sunday during the season. This gives Lakesiders the opportunity to visit, meet the artists, check out the projects for the week and sign up for classes.

Waterfront Dining at Hotel Lakeside Café
The Hotel Lakeside dining room and outdoor café are open, serving lunch from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and dinner from 5-8 p.m. Monday-Saturday. On Sunday, a brunch buffet is offered from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost for Sunday Brunch is $15.95 for adults, $6.95 for children ages 6-10 and children under age five are free. In the case of inclement weather, the outdoor café will be closed. |

Throughout the summer, Lakeside will be accepting entries for a photo contest. The selected photo(s) will appear in the 2012 Calendar of Events brochure.
Share your Lakeside photos that capture the Chautauqua spirit and celebrate the unique beauty and character of the community. Images should represent family, traditions, children, religion, education, cultural arts (special events, programming), recreation, landscape, architecture and most importantly, people enjoying Lakeside. (Limit five photos.)

 More than 700 kids decorate their bikes to participate in the Fourth of July Children's Bike Parade.
 Lakeside Wooden Boat Society sponsors a Summer Evening Cruise, Dinner and Lecture on July 6. More than 40 Lakesiders attend the event.
 Children's singer-songwriter Chip Richter entertains the crowd of children at God Squad.
 Mary Ann Hirsch, Lakeside Association executive assistant, serves as grand marshal of the Fourth of July Float Parade. She represents more than 350 Lakeside volunteers that contribute their time and hard work to Lakeside.
 This garden, located at 325 W. Fourth St. (Tom & Lori Hilt), received the Most Outstanding Award for residential gardens in 7th Annual Lakeside Garden Tour.

Welcome to Week 4 of the Season
There are many opportunities to nurture mind, body and spirit during the 138th Chautauqua summer season. Celtic music group Gaelic Storm will perform at 8:15 p.m. Saturday, July 9 in Hoover Auditorium with acoustic renditions of traditional Irish and Scottish songs.
The Rev. Eric C. Shafer will serve as the Chaplain of the Week and deliver the message, "Widely Scattered Seeds," at the 10:30 a.m. Sunday Hoover Worship Service. Daily educational seminars will discuss the Challenges of Forgiveness and Roots of American Music.
Hoover Auditorium nightly entertainment will include Country Dance & Family Fun Night, Apollo's Fire "Oh Shenandoah," Trout Fishing in America, Marcus Belgrave "Early Jazz in America" and The Passing Zone jugglers.
Finally, the Kelleys Island Swim takes place at 7:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 13 and multiple Ohio Shuffleboard Tournaments are being held this week. |
Annual Crampton Memorial Art Show
 For more than half a century, Lakeside has hosted an annual art show in Hoover Auditorium Lobby.
This year's Katharine C. Crampton Memorial Art Show will begin with an Opening Night Reception from 7-7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 12, in Hoover Auditorium. The show will continue through Saturday, July 30.
Patrons will have the opportunity to view the artwork from 3-5 p.m. every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, as well as a half-hour prior to each 8:15 p.m. Hoover Auditorium performance. Read more...

Lutheran Summer Assembly
This week is the gathering of the annual Lutheran Summer Assembly. For nearly 90 years, participants have had the opportunity to explore the meaning of faith and life at Lakeside.
Lutherans from across Ohio come together, but all are invited to attend the services and offerings. This year's overall theme is "Spiritual Journeys and the Search for Peace." Lutheran Summer Assembly programs explore and encourage spiritual journeys of peace, including the search for understanding between people of different beliefs. Lakeside Federation of Women's Clubs Convention meets in Lakeside
The 117th Annual Convention of the Lakeside Federation of Women's Clubs will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, July 13 at the Lakeside Women's Club, 161 Walnut Ave.
The federation consists of 20 clubs from northwest Ohio, including clubs from Lakeside and Port Clinton. Women from this area have been meeting annually since 1894 to hear speakers of interest and to exchange information. President Margaret Mann from Lakeside has chosen the theme, "Let There be Peace on Earth."
The programs planned for this year's convention include "Reprogramming to Read," presented by Dr. Michael French, a professor at Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio. Lt. Col. Sarah Deal, will give a presentation about her experiences flying while serving in the Marines. Music for the luncheon, served at the Hotel Lakeside Café, will be offered by The Elders, a jazz group from the Port Clinton-Lakeside area. Read more... |
Financial Planning + Generosity Series
The Lakeside Chautauqua Foundation (LCF) presents the Financial Planning + Generosity seminars at 3:30 p.m. on Mondays in the Fountain Inn Green Room. These seminars are made possible by Key Private Bank.
Lakeside welcomes Bruce McCain, KeyBank chief economic strategist, on Monday, July 11, to discuss the State of the Economy.
In this seminar, McCain will discuss slow economic growth and what lies ahead for Q3 and beyond. He will also present his views on investment in today's marketplace and how factors such as energy, inflation and the world economy may play a role in the rest of 2011 and in 2012.

Chaplain of the Week: The Rev. Eric C. Shafer
 Lakeside's Chaplain of the Week preaches at the 10:30 a.m. worship service at Hoover Auditorium, as well as each morning for Chaplain's Hour at 9:15 a.m. Monday-Thursday in Orchestra Hall, and at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday for Evening Praise at the Steele Memorial Bandstand.
For 2011, the format for the Friday Chaplain's Hour is an informal time of discussion with the Chaplain of the Week at 9:15 a.m. in Orchestra Hall.

Gaelic Storm
Gaelic Storm is a Celtic music group originally from Santa Monica, Calif., specializing in acoustic renditions of traditional Irish and Scottish songs.
The band tours internationally, has been featured in James Cameron's 1997 film "Titanic" and has launched its own label, Lost Again Records.
The group was formed in 1995 when Patrick Murphy, lead singer and accordion player from Cork, Ireland, and Steve Twigger, guitarist and vocalist from Coventry, England, played together at O'Brien's Pub in Santa Monica. Read more...

Ohio-based Back Porch Swing Band exemplifies the genre of Western Swing. The group will bring a variety of swing, polka, Appalachian, bluegrass and folk music with a country twist to Lakeside's Steele Memorial Bandstand for Sunday's Family Night in the Park.

Country Dance & Family Fun Night
All are encouraged to bring their families and friends to the annual Country Dance & Family Fun Night for music, refreshments and dancing.
This year, the Cottonwood String Jam Band will be performing live on Hoover Auditorium Porch.

Apollo's Fire "Oh Shenandoah"
 The Apollo's Fire concert is sponsored in part by the Ohio Arts Council 'Artists on Tour' program.
Apollo's Fire, The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, is a period-instrument ensemble specializing in renaissance, baroque and early classical music. For its Lakeside "Oh Shenandoah" performance, the group will blend Appalachian ballads and fiddle tunes with their signature sound.
The group was founded in 1992 by harpsichordist and conductor Jeannette Sorrell. The ensemble has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe. Read more...

Trout Fishing in America
Trout Fishing in America (TFIA), "the Lennon and McCartney of kids' music," will showcase its original music that will appeal to both children and adults.
Comprised of Ezra Idlet on the guitar and Keith Grimwood on the bass, the duo has been recording, writing and performing together for three decades. Grimwood and Idlet first got together in the 70s, playing for the Houston, Texas group St. Elmo's Fire until the band dissolved in 1979. Read more...

Marcus Belgrave "Early Jazz in America"
Marcus Belgrave, a leading force in Detroit jazz, utilizes elements of both classical and contemporary jazz.
Known for his phenomenal trumpet playing skills and fast fingers, Belgrave truly brings jazz to life. An original member of Ray Charles' band, Belgrave was also part of the Lincoln Center Motor City Jazz Masters.
During his career, he has worked with Wynton Marsalis, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and other artists. Read more...

The Passing Zone "Gravity Attacks!"
The Passing Zone, known for its comedic antics as well as its exceptional juggling, will showcase its "Gravity Attacks!" performance in a night of jokes and flying objects.
"Gravity Attacks!" is a show that defies gravity with a theme that is out of this world. In defiance of gravity, their world-renowned juggling skills will entertain audience members and keep them on the edge of their seats.
The Passing Zone, comprised of jugglers Owen Morse and Jon Wee, has been working together since meeting at a juggling convention in 1986. Read more...

Kelleys Island Swim
The annual Kelleys Island Swim is a four-mile swim from the Lakeside Dock to Kelleys Island at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13.
Swimmers must qualify for the actual swim at 8 a.m. on Monday, July 11. The qualifying event is a two-mile swim along the Lakeside shoreline. Swimmers need to have a light-colored, numbered swimming cap and must be able to swim the entire distance without assistance from lifeguards or staff and without touching the bottom of the lake. While the qualifying swim is not a race, the times posted in this swim will be used to help pair up swimmers for the four-mile swim.
Download the application form and return to the Lakeside Association Office. There is a $25 entry fee due upon registration.
Lakesiders are welcome to volunteer for this event by being spotters or boat drivers. If you have a boat and would like to volunteer on July 13, contact Grace Kelmer at (419) 798-4461 or email programminglla@gmail.com.
Ohio Shuffleboard Tournaments
There are three unique shuffleboard tournaments, each with no separate entry fee, although all players must belong to an Ohio State Shuffleboard Association (OSSA) sanctioned club.
The "best value" is to join the Lakeside Shuffleboard Club (LSC) for only $3. Players may join the LSC at shuffleboard anytime, even before tournament sign-up.
All registration begins at 8:15 a.m. on the first day of each tournament and ends exactly at 9 a.m. Important Note: OSSA tournament rules require all players to wear close-toed shoes. For questions about any shuffleboard tournament, ask the Shuffleboard Staff.
Monday, July 11 - Bill Slyh Any Doubles Bill Slyh was a longtime Lakeside Shuffleboard manager and a superior player. The Bill Slyh Any Doubles is open to any two Lakeside shufflers, 16 and older, who wish to team up. All matches are best two-out-of-three games to 75 points.
Wednesday, July 13 - Ohio State Amateur Any Doubles Championship The Ohio State Amateur Any Doubles is open to any two amateur shufflers, 16 and older, who wish to team up.
Thursday, July 14 - Ohio State Doubles Men's & Women's Open Championships The Ohio State Doubles features separate divisions for women and men. The tournament is open to any women's or men's team, 16 and older. Matches are best two-out-of-three games to 75 points.
