Final Wooden Boat Cruise Sunday, Aug. 29 5 p.m. Pavilion Reservations must be made at 5 p.m. at the "Boat Rides" booth near the Pavilion. A $10 deposit is required for each passenger and will be refunded when boarding the boat. Rides begin at 6:30 p.m., weather permitting, and last 30 minutes.
Story Time for Kids Saturday, Aug. 28 9:30 a.m. Green Gables (161 Walnut Ave.) The Lakeside Women's Club holds story time for kids ages 4-10 every Saturday.

Farmers' Market Tuesday, Aug. 31 & Friday, Sept. 3 9 a.m.-noon Walnut Avenue Local farmers will sell vegetables, herbs, fruits, flowers, jams, baked goods and tea. Reusable Farmers' Market bags are available at the Lakeside Association Office for $3. Friday, Sept. 3 will be the final Farmers' Market of the season.
Final Yellow Hat Activity Wednesday, Sept. 1 10:10 a.m. Train Station The Yellow Hat Society is taking a field trip to Back to the Wild in Castalia. Meet at the Train Station by 10:10 a.m. to carpool to the 11 a.m. tour. Drivers are needed. Admission is free, but donations are encouraged. Lunch will be at the Cold Creek Café in Castalia.
Historic Walking Tour of Lakeside Wednesday, Sept. 1 10:30 a.m. Heritage Hall The Lakeside Heritage Society sponsors free walking tours every Wednesday. The Sept. 1 tour will be the last one of the season.
Pictures of Hope Grief Support Group Friday, Sept. 3 10:30 a.m.-noon Train Station Dixie Merrill has been offering this support group for nine years. This group is not for grief counseling, but, rather, is for grief support. Men, women and teens are welcome. No one is required to share unless they wish to. This will be the last support group meeting of the season.

Closed for Season Due to end of season staffing shortages, the Hotel Lakeside Dining Room, outdoor Café and Sunday Brunch Buffet are closed for the season. Hotel Lakeside thanks guests for their patronage this "opening" season and apologizes for any inconvenience this may cause.

After Friday, Sept. 3, Allied Waste will revert to once-a-week trash pick-up. Place trash at the curb in a covered container before 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday to ensure pick up. The last day for Lakeside's curbside recycling service is Friday, Sept. 24. Residents may continue to use the large recycling container at the South Parking Lot.
Fall Leaf Pick-Up Schedule Lakeside will provide free leaf pick-up this fall, beginning Monday, Oct. 25. The pick-up schedule is available online.

Welcome to Week 11 of Lakeside's Chautauqua summer season!
The final week of the season offers many opportunities to nurture mind, body and spirit. The Rev. Robert E. Butcher will lead the Sunday Hoover Worship Service at 10:30 a.m. with his sermon "Honey From the Rock." Multiple "Chaplains of the Day" will lead Chaplain's Hour throughout the week. The 24th Annual Senior Venture Week will feature educational seminars on "Life in America: 1920-1940" and "Orchards as Lakeside Neighbors." Nightly entertainment will include the steel drum band Pantasia and several bandstand performances. In recreation, Lakeside shuffleboarders have returned from Germany and Hatha yoga classes are being offered through September.
Gate pass rates will be reduced from Sunday, Aug. 29-Monday, Sept. 6. Daily passes will be $8.75 for adults and $6.25 for youth ages 12-18. Children under age 12 and guests over 90 are free. |

The Rhein Center Says Goodbye to Director Juliann Breting Rohn

Hoover Worship Preacher: The Rev. Robert E. Butcher
 The Rev. Robert E. Butcher earned his master of divinity degree from the Reformed Church in America Seminary in New Brunswick, N.J. In 1994, he received his certification as a spiritual director from the Roman Catholic diocese of Cleveland. He served as pastor of Petersburg Presbyterian Church in Petersburg, Ohio, the First Presbyterian Church of West Carrolton, Ohio, and Firelands Presbyterian Church in Port Clinton, Ohio, where he retired after 24 years. From 2008-2009, he was Lakeside's Vespers Coordinator, and introduced Taizé worship to the community. The Rev. Butcher will preach at the 10:30 a.m. Hoover Worship Service on Sunday, Aug 29. His sermon is "Honey From the Rock." Monday-Friday, there will be a "Chaplain of the Day" program. "Chaplain of the Day" ProgramThis year's "Chaplain of the Day" theme is based on the hymn "The Summons." Pastors will reflect on their own calling and faith journey. Saturday, Aug. 28 Pantasia Pantasia, Findlay High School's steel drum band, was founded in 1997 by Findlay City Schools Band Director and Band Department Chair Tim Mattis. Since then, the group has won multiple awards, including National Grand Champion Percussion Ensemble at MusicFest Orlando. Pantasia averages more than 40 performances each year, at such venues as Carnival Cruise Lines, Disney's Magic Music Days and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The band has released five albums, with songs ranging from Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," to "Kiss the Girl" from "The Little Mermaid." Its latest album, "Jump For Joy," features selections such as "Beyond the Sea," "The Girl from Ipanema," and "Brown Eyed Girl." Sunday, Aug. 29 6 p.m. Steele Memorial Bandstand (Central Park) Loosely Strung Loosely Strung is comprised of Ted Christy, Dan Epley, Dean Gledhill and Jackie Lamuth. The group describes itself as "a high energy acoustic band with a little electric." Instruments include five-string banjo, upright bass, guitar, steel-top resonator guitar, harmonica and mandolin. Its song list is "lively, traditional American music--bluegrass, folk, country, old standards, a little Dixieland and more. It's music you know--music you remember." Selections range from "America the Beautiful" to Kathy Mattea's "Eighteen Wheels and a Dozen Roses" to The Beach Boys' "Sloop John B." Monday, Aug. 30 7 p.m. Steele Memorial Bandstand (Central Park) Casie Scott and Spencer Eller A lifelong Lakesider, Casie Scott has been a member of the Hoover Stage Crew since 2004. Spencer Eller came to Lakeside two years ago from North Canton, Ohio. The two first performed together in 2009, when Eller provided guitar accompaniment for Scott's solo performance at the Steele Memorial Bandstand. This year, Eller will both sing and play guitar. The duo will cover a variety of music, from Lady Antebellum to Janis Joplin to The Beatles. Most of their songs are popular country or classic rock hits. "Anyone who comes down will find something they like," said Scott. Tuesday, Aug. 31 7 p.m. Steele Memorial Bandstand (Central Park) All About HIM Featuring three-part harmonies and a blend of acoustic instruments, All About HIM performs a variety of music, including traditional hymns and contemporary gospel music, "all with a touch of bluegrass and a little humor added in." The group is comprised of Alana Goetz on melodica, percussion and vocals; Cindy Slee on acoustic guitar and vocals; Gina Foley on mandolin and vocals; and Curtis Lowe on upright bass. The group has released two albums: 2006's "All About Hymns," a collection of traditional hymns, and 2008's "Waiting for Change," featuring 12 original songs and few new "flavors," such as rock-inspirational-Celtic and Latino. Wednesday, Sept. 1 7 p.m. Steele Memorial Bandstand (Central Park) Glass City Dixieland Band Described as "a great evening of toe-tapping, foot-stomping New Orleans style Dixieland jazz," Glass City Dixieland Band is comprised of a "front line" of clarinet, trombone and cornet, and a rhythm section of piano, banjo, bass and drums. The band plays "all the old standard tunes of the Dixieland era." Its song list includes "What a Wonderful World," "Just a Closer Walk with Thee," "The Darktown Strutters' Ball," "When the Saints Go Marching In," "Just a Little While to Stay Here" and "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?" Thursday, Sept. 2 7 p.m. Steele Memorial Bandstand (Central Park) Lance Horwedel Noted sound engineer and musician Lance Horwedel is a member of Fleetwood Mac tribute band the Rumours; classic rock cover bands Legends of Rock and Dazey Chain; and hard rock band The End. As Bar 61, Horwedel and musician Tony Pine have released two albums, and have had songs featured on the television show "Army Wives" and in the film "Aurora Borealis." For his Lakeside performance, he will play classic acoustic rock songs from the 1960s and 1970s, featuring artists such as The Beatles, The Turtles, America, Elton John and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Friday, Sept. 3 7 p.m. Steele Memorial Bandstand (Central Park) Hey Mavis Formed in 2008 as part of the artist-in-residence program in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Hey Mavis is comprised of Lakesider and nationally acclaimed fiddler Ed Caner; songwriter, vocalist and banjo player Laurie Michelle Caner; and songwriter, vocalist and bass player Sarah Benn. The group's music crosses Americana, Texas two-step, bluegrass, folk and art rock genres and blends female vocal harmonies, banjo, upright bass, fiddle and viola for a unique and innovative sound. The trio, described as "modern old-timey," released its first album, "Red Wine," on Aug. 8. |

Lakeside Shuffleboarders Return from Germany
 On Aug. 1-8, Riley Hubbard, Michael Hirsch and Anthony Ramicone, along with Rich and Marilynn Phifer, traveled to Germany to compete in the 2010 World Cup Team Tournament. The three boys were on the United Nations (UN) youth teams. Hubbard's team finished third, while Hirsch and Ramicone's team finished fourth in the 12-team Men's Division. Rich said that the three boys were wonderful ambassadors for the U.S. and Lakeside. Rich was a member of the Championship team in the Men's Division and received gold. Marilynn was a member of team USA in the 10-team Women's Division and her team finished third. "Lakeside is the heart of youth shuffleboard for the world," Rich said. "Playing tournaments and practicing at Lakeside prepared us for the tournament, but there was certainly nervousness as we want to represent our team and country well." Rich, Marilynn and the three boys would like to thank the Lakeside community, as well as the Lakeside Shuffleboard Staff and Club members. "They made this all possible with their work with youth shuffleboard over the years and particularly with their special efforts this summer to successfully make Germany 2010 a true Lakeside celebration," Rich said. Hatha Yoga Classes Offered in September
Yoga classes will be offered from 8-9 a.m. on Thursday for four consecutive weeks Sept. 2-23 in the Upper Room. Basic and experienced students are welcome. Cost will be a love offering (donation). Linda Green, BA, RPP, RPE, is the certified instructor leading the classes. She has been teaching yoga in this area for 29 years. |
