Ensure the Lakeside Experience Today
Lakeside PavilionWe sit under the towering trees as the warm summer sun hits our faces, and in the background we hear children playing in Central Park or hear the discs colliding on the shuffleboard courts.  We watch couples stroll down the lakefront path and children run towards the dock for an afternoon swim.  We experience renewal of our souls, refresh our spirits, engage in intellectual discussions, experience the beauty of a ballet performance and challenge a friend to a recreational pursuit.  We remember this rest and renewal as we anticipate the next bad winter storm, the hectic athletic schedules or music auditions, or the mad rush out the door before school or work.  We know the importance of the Chautauqua experience in our lives, and cherish this time deeply, even in the long winter months.

Today, the Lakeside Chautauqua Foundation invites you to ensure the Lakeside experience by giving a generous gift to the Foundation in support of the Lakeside Fund before March 31.  Your final gift to the Lakeside Fund 2009/10 supports the Chautauqua experience that is so dearly treasured.  Please join the Lakeside community and consider an online gift to achieve the Lakeside Fund goal.
Lakeside Laundromat Reopens for 2010 Chautauqua Season
Marcy and Tom WinkelThe Lakeside Association is pleased to announce the reopening of the Lakeside Laundromat.  The new proprietors of the business are Tom and Marcy Winkel of Lewis Center, Ohio.

Tom became familiar with the Lake Erie region from his visits to Gem Beach with his parents.  Years later, Tom and Marcy discovered Lakeside on a whim.  Marcy describes the experience as, "Love at first sight."  Not long after their first encounter with the Chautauqua community, the family purchased a cottage in 2001 with plans to retire.  Last summer the Lakeside Laundromat opportunity became available.  Tom noticed that with his background in operating the family bowling business for 25 years and owning a commercial cleaning business for 15 years would be a great fit in helping to revive the Lakeside Laundromat.  Tom and Marcy plan on moving to Lakeside permanently this spring.

The Winkels have placed much thought and preparation into the reopening of the Lakeside Laundromat, set to debut at the beginning of the Chautauqua summer season, contingent upon renovation and equipment installation.  The laundromat will receive complete exterior and interior renovations.  New equipment will be installed, including a new restroom, seating and counter.  The laundromat will offer wash and fold service, commercial laundry service, alterations and Wi-Fi, among other services.  Green cleaning products will be available for purchase.  The exterior improvements include cafĂ©-style seating near the entrance, a drop-off space and extra parking behind the laundromat for customer convenience.  The Winkels announce that the laundromat will be open year-round.

Lakeside is grateful to the Winkels for upgrading this service to our guests.  Please join us in welcoming the Winkels to the Lakeside business district!
Harps in Harmony Concert to Benefit Haiti
Lakeside United Methodist ChurchThe Terra Community College Harp Ensemble, directed by Karen Westgate, is slated to perform a concert at the Lakeside United Methodist Church, 450 Central Avenue, at 2 pm on Sunday, March 7 to benefit the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Lakeside United Methodist Church member Judith Burchfield is also a member of the Harp Ensemble, which has volunteered to provide music for the benefit.  The concert will feature the Lakeside United Methodist Church choir, under the direction of Larry Pierce, and soloist Joshua Twining.

During the event, Willy Sommervil will speak about the conditions that persist in Haiti and the needs that continue to plague the country.  A Lakeside United Methodist Church member, Sommervil is an immigrant from Haiti.  He moved to Lakeside nearly 20 years ago and is now a U.S. citizen.  Sommervil's extended family members were affected by the earthquake; therefore, he is extremely passionate about raising awareness of the devastating conditions still present in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake.  Sommervil has become an integral part of the community, both here in Lakeside and throughout the Marblehead Peninsula.

All funds collected in a free will offering during the concert will go directly to Haiti relief.
March Community Lunch Celebrates St. Patrick's Day
Maidens IVThe Lakeside Association and Otterbein North Shore Retirement Community will collaborate for a special community lunch inviting Lakeside friends, family, property owners and staff to celebrate St. Patrick's Day at 12 pm on Thursday, March 18 in Wesley Lodge.  A festive lunch menu will be provided for $6/person.

The gathering will include live Celtic music by Maidens IV.  The ensemble delivers high-action Celtic and Roots music, mixed with pop, world and Gypsy jazz.  Maidens IV's musical fusion blends guitar, voice, violin and viola into a Celtic-infused folk rock celebration.

Due to limited seating, reservations must be made in advance.  Please RSVP by Monday, March 8 by contacting 866.952.5374, ext. 0 or guestinfo@lakesideohio.com.  Invite a Lakeside friend or neighbor!

Lakeside Represented at World Youth Shuffleboard Tournament
ShuffleboardThe Lakeside Shuffleboard Club is proud to announce that Michael Hirsch and Anthony Ramicone, two outstanding Lakeside youth shuffleboard players, have been invited by International Shuffleboard Association (ISA) President Earl Ball to play on the first ISA World Youth Shuffleboard Team.  Other Lakeside youth have been invited and are currently working out the details.

The 28th ISA Team Tournament will be held August 1-10, 2010 in Hodenroda, Hesse, Germany.  Selected youth from various countries will join together to create a World Youth Team.  The team will compete against several countries' men's teams.

Last summer, the Lakeside Shuffleboard Club informed youth players about the World Youth Team.  The Club selected several talented youth, including three girls; however, the ISA did not receive enough applications from girl shuffleboard players in other countries to form a team.  The ISA's purpose is to promote worldwide shuffleboard, and the creation of the  World Youth Team will build more youth opportunities to both boys and girls in the future.

In addition, the current Lakeside Youth Shuffleboard Tournament Director Marilynn Phifer and the current Lakeside Shuffleboard Club President Rich Phifer have been invited by USA Shuffleboard Association President Jim Bailey to play on the respective women's and men's USA Teams for the World Cup.

To promote these international shuffleboard tournaments this Chautauqua summer season, the Lakeside Shuffleboard Club will coordinate "World Cup Germany 2010" activities for youth and the community.  Best of luck to Hirsch, Ramicone and the Phifers!
