Sunshine Vibe A Success!
Project Sunshine's Fifth Annual Gala was a huge success in support, entertainment, and attendance. The event honored Rick Cummings, President of the Radio Division of Emmis Communications and the newest member of Project Sunshine's Board of Directors. The evening raised $756,843 with more donations still coming in. The night featured a performance by Ingrid Michaelson, a new talent who sang hits off her debut album Boys and Girls, and Funkmaster Flex, who brought everyone to the dance floor to end the evening with a true "Sunshine Vibe." Celebrity guests included Miss Universe Riyo Mori, Miss USA Crystle Stewart, Miss Teen USA Hilary Cruz, Designer Liz Lange, Cooper Pillot from The Naked Brother's Band, and Rachel Covey from the movie Enchanted, among others! Miss USA Pageant Contestants Volunteer With Project Sunshine
On April 4, 2008, the fifty Miss USA 2008 Pageant contestants, along with Rachel Smith, Miss USA 2007 and a Project Sunshine volunteer, volunteered their time in Las Vegas by making Sunny Gram greeting cards for children facing medical challenges. The contestants were very excited to volunteer while preparing for the Pageant, and created wonderful cards that will bring sunshine to children across the country! Learn More.

Spotlight On: Sam Houston State University in Texas
Founded in Texas in 2005, the Sam Houston State University Chapter has grown from a handful of members to 35 members in 2008! The success of this Project Sunshine Chapter can be seen in its leaders, including the Chapter Leaders, Gail Wright and Sheila Cannon, who work hard to provide programming for children facing medical challenges. This chapter recently recognized the need for volunteer events that allow the children to increase their mobility and encourages them to be more physically active. In that vein, they began offering a Buddy Baseball game which provides each child with an opportunity to improve their social skills and increase their self-confidence, all while learning about healthy lifestyle choices! The Sam Houston State University Project Sunshine volunteers are innovative and dedicated, serving as a model for chapters domestically and internationally.

Board Spotlight
Project Sunshine is honored to welcome two new individuals to our Board of Directors: Rick Cummings and Robin Wilpon Wachtler. Rick Cummings, President of the Radio Division of Emmis Communications, joined our Board this May after being honored at Project Sunshine's 5th Annual Gala. Rick has been working in radio since 1973 and has volunteered, along with many of his colleagues from Emmis Communications, with Project Sunshine. Rick resides in La Canada, California with his wife and children. Robin Wilpon Wachtler joined Project Sunshine's Board of Directors this spring. Robin has been an active member of her community for many years and is eager to lend her support to Project Sunshine. She lives in Long Island, New York with her husband and children. We look thrilled to have them on board! Learn more about Project Sunshine's Board.

Origins Project Sunshine Week
During Project Sunshine Week (May 5th - May 12th), Origins Natural Resources stores across the country collected over 1700 new children's books and 550 kid-friendly bandages to be distributed to children facing medical challenges throughout the United States! Origins also generously donated a percentage of sales from that week to Project Sunshine. In addition, on Friday, May 9th, Macy's 75 east coast stores conducted "A Day of Sunshine" at each Origins counter, promoting Project Sunshine. Thanks so much to both Origins and Macy's for helping make Project Sunshine Week 2008 a HUGE success! Learn more.
