Dear Friend,

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems hopes that you and yours enjoy a wonderful holiday season and New Year!

As we reflect back on 2008, we believe the ideas,  innovations and developments at CEFS are leading the way to a brighter future in North Carolina. With your support we were able to:

  • Launch our statewide effort to develop and promote sustainable community-based food economies.
  • Host Judy Wicks as our 2008 Sustainable Agriculture Lecture.
  • Promote and advance the local food-production infrastructure to benefit farmers, businesses, and consumers through our NC Choices initiative.
  • Support the ambitions of students interested in sustainable agriculture with our Internship and Farm Apprentice programs.
  • Further our role to inspire tomorrow's leaders by implementing hands-on and inquiry-based curriculum to support NC's Standard Course of Study for Science.
  • Sponsor dozens of hands-on workshops covering an array of topics from organic gardening to fueling the farm to raising goats
-all of which benefit hundreds of farmers, kids, educators, businesses, community leaders and individuals through our Seasons of Sustainable Agriculture Workshop series.
  • Expand our research programs in sustainable and organic agriculture-from conservation practices for outdoor pig production to habitat development for beneficial insects and pollinators.

As we look forward we are determined to continue and expand each of the above initiatives.  We know that today's economy is difficult but we hope that you will continue to support CEFS to ensure our success in 2009.
If an end of year gift fits into your plans, you can visit Friends of CEFS on our website or make an online donation through College Advancement. We our committed to the betterment of our communities through education and outreach; we know you are to.

Sincerely,

Nancy Creamer
Director of CEFS

Mission & History of CEFS

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems develops and promotes food and farming systems that protect the environment, strengthen local communities, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond.

North Carolina State University and North Carolina A&T State University established the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture at the Cherry Farm facility near Goldsboro, NC in 1994. These partners work closely with state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations (for example, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, Rural Advancement Foundation International, Farm Bureau), farmers, and citizens to provide agricultural research, extension, and education for our state. The development of CEFS is a national model for partnership, innovation, and interdisciplinary cooperation.
