The purpose of this panel is to highlight the role of acequia officials in successful planning and implementation of acequia construction projects.  Acequia commissioners will share lessons learned about challenges they overcame with regard to funding, coordination with state and federal agencies, working with contractors to complete projects that improve water availability for their local acequias.  Other challenges include easement issues, particularly with regard to the US Forest Service.

Planning Tools for Acequias

This panel will include information from NMAA staff about Acequia Restoration Plans, a method for mapping acequias and involving local acequias in an assessment of their infrastructure.  These mapping projects are a valuable way to involve acequia members in the planning process and for prioritizing infrastructure needs.   The panel will also include an overview of the process to complete an Infrastructure Capital Improvement Plan with the State of New Mexico.   ICIPs are useful tools for outlining infrastructure needs, timelines, and funding options.

  • Quita Ortiz, Land and Water Program Manager, Community Planner and GIS Mapping Specialist
  • Janice Varela, Community Organizer and Technical Assistance Coordinator
