Social Learning Site -- Alumni Coaches Are Back!

We have been developing our online social learning site for students and clients. The site's features include both instructions for 30+ TL exercises and tools for peer-to-peer coaching. Rigorous privacy protections ensure that everyone has control over who sees what.

So far, over 1,200 people on our site have produced over 15,000 posts. They've given helpful feedback on what we need to do to make this site as productive and helpful as possible. Eventually we will open it to the public. Stay tuned!

I'm thrilled to report that we are reinstating the Alumni Coach (AC) system.  Starting next month, each MBA student in the TL course at Wharton will be paired with an AC, who will provide guidance on the exercises posted on our social learning site.  Here's the illustrious roster of Spring 2012 ACs:

Raghava Bharadwaj, Rupesh Doshi, Ish Dugal, Beth Edwards, Pamela Fung, Courtney Graybill, Larry Harris, Anjana Harve, Yoshi Hashimoto, Grace Ho, Sandy Hsiao, Clare Kanter, Clay Kramer, Donal McElwee, Rich Meene, Phuong Nguyen, Raj Rajagopal, Ashley Smith, Jason Thacker, Reginald Tucker, Dan Voss, Jeff Wilen, Peter Yordan, Samuel Young, Alice Zhang

They've signed up to give back, keep the concepts and tools fresh, and develop new connections in our growing community. Contact me to learn more.

Where in the World is Total Leadership?

Natick, MA

US Army

Earlier this year, a team of three -- Donna Bulger, Joelle Haskell, and Andrea St. George -- was certified to deliver TL to others at this 800-person R&D facility.  I'm pleased to report that they are now doing so with great results. Here's what Andrea wrote to us recently:

As a government organization we are going through some very challenging times.  Now, more than ever, our people need to see clearly where they are going as individual leaders and where we as an organization are going together.  We need the skills and confidence to ask for help, to reach out to those who need help, and to support each other through coaching as we seek to produce positive change.  The Total Leadership program is helping our organization do all of these things and is improving performance in our work and in our lives with the practical application of peer-to-peer coaching, the detailing of our leadership visions, the open communication with our key stakeholders, and the creative pursuit of four-way wins.  I highly recommend this engaging and transformative method.  It's fun and it works!

Houston

Mattress Firm

I just completed a series of workshops with the senior executives who constitute the national sales team of Mattress Firm, based in Houston.  Here's some of what VP Ken Murphy had to say about what he took away:

What this program helped crystallize for me about leadership is the importance of giving time, attention, and credence to life's multiple domains; not only so that I personally can operate in a more harmonic fashion, but just as significantly, so that I can be sure to "send the right message" to those who I lead and those who I influence.

China

Cisco

Beth Xu, an executive in Cisco's Advanced Services group for Greater China, was a star in my Wharton course a few years ago. She recently asked me to launch a TL program with her team. Our workshops will use Cisco's TelePresence; I will be in Philadelphia and participants will be in different Chinese cities. They will post exercises and coach each other on our social learning site.

Washington, DC

Society for Human Resource Management / Families and Work Institute

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to participate in a panel at the inaugural SHRM / FWI conference with Ellen Kossek and Wayne Cascio. Each of us offered our distinctive perspectives on what the latest research tells us about what works and what doesn't in creating organizations that enable successful performance in all parts of life.

On the Radio

I had a great time in lively conversation with two fantastic radio hosts:

Thinkers 50

I was honored to be among someThinkers50 of my heroes -- Hermi Ibarra, Rosabeth Kanter, Jeff Pfeffer, and others -- on the 2011 list of the "world's top 50 business thinkers."

Alumni Updates

It's inspiring to hear about TL alumni pursuing their leadership visions:

Stacey Radin

Stacey's vision combined her passion for providing leadership role models for girls with her love of animals.  Last year she founded Unleashed, an after-school program that transforms the lives of middle school girls by involving them in animal rescue.  Since its inception, Unleashed has doubled in size and is going national with a train-the-trainer program. Read more in O, The Oprah Magazine.

Gita Sjahrir
Gita wrote recently with an update on what's transpired since she graduated from the Wharton MBA program a couple of years ago:

After graduating from Wharton... I landed a job with a big box retailer only to learn that the job really was not for me. I was unhappy and I did not feel authentic ... I decided to start my own business. I founded my company...and am working with some of the best minds in marketing and technology. I am developing an ecommerce website and an iPhone app...We recently received funding and I am very excited ... I have never felt this whole and real in my life.

Living here in NY I have made some great friends from different industries, such as media, fashion and technology. I've continued to do my yoga and have been trying different activities on my down time, such as muay thai and krav maga. I've decided to make the most out of my life every day.

I don't think you know sometimes what a difference your lesson makes to your students ... Thank you for teaching me to be authentic. Finally, I can see all the different aspects and circles in my life coming together, simply because I stayed true to myself.
