Total Leadership News |
July 2011
|
Hi!
It's summer here on the East Coast, but, to paraphrase the immortal Gershwin, the
livin' ain't so easy for far too many people these days. The purpose of Total Leadership is to make things better -- to improve performance in all parts of life by finding mutual value among them. This issue has news about what we've been doing, instructive stories of exemplary leaders and inspiring alumni, and a few book recommendations.
Wishing you and your loved ones a wonderful summer season, Stew

Exemplary Leaders -- Biographies on Slideshare / Interviews on YouTube
|
Biographies written by Wharton MBAs. Each student in my Wharton full-time MBA course on Total Leadership presents to our class a biography of a leader who exemplifies the course's core principles. We just opened a Slideshare account to display the presentation materials. Here you can view and comment on this diverse array of great biographies done by the Spring 2011 class, including John Wooden, Ina Garten, John Adams, Kathryn Bigelow, Andre Agassi and many more. Check them out! Discover, be inspired, and let us know what you think.
Video interviews with fascinating leaders. Our YouTube channel now has interviews I've done in the last few years with six remarkable leaders on what they've learned about the puzzle of performing well in all domains of their lives. The set, on the Conversations playlist, includes Brett Hurt, Joseph Ansanelli, Tom Tierney, Dave Lissey, and Kevin and Hannah Salwen. |

What a powerful experience it was to speak last month to 700 business leaders in Chile's capital! Whether it's because of the deep need or a cultural resonance with the ideas and practices of Total Leadership, there's been a particularly strong response to it in Latin American countries. Here's an interview (written in Spanish) I did with America Economia while I was there. Manaus, Brazil Comite Israelita do Amazonas
My son Gabriel is living and working in Manaus,Brazil this year, and he helped organize a talk I gave for about 100 business and community leaders there. It was a thrill to share my work with this remarkable group, and to do so in conjunction with one of my children.

It's inspiring to hear about TL alumni who are doing interesting things that have an impact on our world. Here are stories of three who've appeared in the media recently:
Dave Asprey: Founder of The Bulletproof Executive featured in the Financial Times
Gianna Driver: Founder of Gianna Fair Trade featured in Inc.'s "30 Under 30"
Shaun Francis: Founder of True Patriot Love writes from Kandahar in the National Post

Community Site Update
|
For over a year now, our team has been working hard to develop an effective social learning Web site for students and organization members to use in completing the Total Leadership program. Essential features include the capacity for peer-to-peer coaching and rigorous privacy protections to ensure that the authors of content have complete control over who sees what they write. Over 1000 people are registered on our site and have been using it. They've provided helpful feedback on what we need to do to make it as productive and engaging as possible. Eventually, we plan to release the site to a broader audience. To learn more or help out, contact me at stew@totalleadership.org.

Tom Tierney and Joel Fleishman
Give Smart: Philanthropy that Gets Results
Despite tremendous innovation in the social sector, philanthropy's natural state is under-performance. This book provides practical guidance for donors to get the most impact from their giving. Almost a decade ago, Tom Tierney left Bain & Company to co-found The Bridgespan Group, a nonprofit focused on helping donors and nonprofit leaders to develop and execute strategies to accelerate social change. In Give Smart, Tierney pools his hands-on knowledge with philanthropy expert Joel L. Fleishman to create a much-needed primer for philanthropists and the nonprofit organizations they support, drawing from personal experiences, testimonials, and Bridgespan's case studies, including those of the Gates and MacArthur Foundations. It's certainly a must-read for everyone in the nonprofit world.

Using Stefanovich's proven LAMSTAIH approach (Look At More Stuff, Think About It Harder), leaders and employees can develop the practical skills, leadership behavior, and cultural mindset to consistently create ideas and drive innovation. Andy is an amazingly creative person who's deeply committed to helping others achieve their full potential.

What is Global Leadership?
Companies worldwide are neglecting to pay attention to the fact that that global leadership requires different skills from those needed in a hierarchical, command-and-control domestic operation. The authors focus on the new set of skills needed to to navigate connections - vertical, cross-functional, and cross-cultural - that were not as critical even a decade ago. They draw on original research, including interviews with successful global leaders, and highlight the ten key behaviors essential for leaders in international settings. Whether you're running an organization, a business unit, or a geographically dispersed team, this guide provides a useful resource for developing global leadership talent.

Leadership Succession
About 25 years ago I gathered up a bunch of great thinkers to share their wisdom about the perennial challenge of designing effective means for investing in the development and selection of executives. Transaction Books published this collection and just a couple of months ago re-issued it in paperback, with a new introduction. I hope you'll find it useful.
