The
Geo-Information Society of South Africa (GISSA),
EE Publishers and the
City of Ekurhuleni have partnered to host the conference and exhibition under the theme:
An African Dialogue: Geomatics for Infrastructure Development and Service Delivery. Media, journalists, editors and camera crews are cordially invited to attend and cover the event. The conference will put significant emphasis on research and development, education and training, skills development and knowledge transfer.
Over 550 delegates from within South Africa, African continent and abroad are attending the conference which presents an opportunity for leaders, academics, professionals, technologists, technicians, students and companies in the public and private sector involved with or interested in geographic information science (GIS), information and communication technology (ICT), global positioning systems (GPS), surveying, remote sensing and location-based applications and business to network and exchange information. They will also look at technological developments, benefits and challenges that face this specialised industry in the world today.
Developed and underdeveloped local towns and cities will get an opportunity to also receive training as three streams of hands-on, computer-based training and knowledge transfer workshops will be held over two days.
"The hosting of the GISSA Ukubuzana 2012 conference could not take place at a more opportune time for us as a city, our vision of becoming Africa's first Aerotropolis is unfolding and linked to this is a repositioning of Ekurhuleni as a digital city," explains Clr. Bennet Nikani, member of the mayoral committee responsible for Economic Development and City Planning.
Nikani says that the City hopes that the hosting of the conference will spark an interest among young people to consider exciting technological fields. "There is a shortage of professionals in surveying, geographic information science (GIS) and remote sensing, not only in South Africa but around the world."
South Africa's leading institutions of higher learning are participating at the conference. Meanwhile, Ekurhuleni GIS Day will take place on 23 November 2012
