IESSA Sept 2012

The lighting industry of South Africa is represented by the
Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA)

South African experts on various topics in the lighting technology field serve on the
CIE international committees responsible for the development of
standards for the different aspects of illumination.

IESSA represents southern Africa internationally and thereby acts as the

National Committee of the CIE (Commition Internationale De L'Eclairage)

Message from the president

I would like to welcome Connie Jonker as IESSA's new technical liaison officer.

Greg Marcia
Greg Marcia

Through his work, the society will now be able to provide better training and other technical services to our corporate members. While our individual members are well covered in terms of these services, corporate members have lagged behind. Connie will be meeting with corporate members soon and his services will initially be free of charge.

The work load on the IESSA council resulting from dealing with standards and regulations, meetings etc., places strain on its members and some of this strain will be relieved with Connie on board.

Connie has much to offer the industry. His knowledge of standards and regulations and his integrity and impartiality make him an asset for IESSA.

IESSA is no longer a "new" organisation and the teething problems are over. We have had a fair amount of talk and now is the time to turn this talk

into action. The IESSA of the near future will be on a more

professional footing. The society is, after all, financed by our members and we will provide them with their money's worth.

The recent increase in membership fees is in line with this approach and not unreasonable. We are on par with other, similar member-funded industry organisations. It is money well spent - we will be introducing a number of new initiatives soon.

Word of warning: are your local products at risk?

The following announcement on the Department of Trade and Industry's website regarding tariff reductions under the preferential trade agreement with India caught my attention. It would perhaps be a good idea for members to check if their products are on the list. The announcement states that the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and India have been engaged in formal trade negotiations aimed at a preferential trade agreement since 2008.

Consultation within NEDLAC (National Economic Development and Labour Council) between 2008 and 2010 resulted in a list of products for export, presented to South African economic role-players and exporters. Invitations were extended to local business via the Government Gazette. NEDLAC and India subsequently exchanged their export lists. The NEDLAC nations - Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland - are currently preparing their respective responses and national positions to a trade request from India. To this end, South Africa is currently engaged in a process of consultation within NEDLAC.

Further information including the Indian request list is available on the Department of Trade and Industry's website, www.thedti.gov.za. Scroll to HS codes 84 and 85 on the Indian list.

Durban Branch Bulletin

Here we are and another month has flown by! Well, I haven't given the members who love old Durban Branch photos anything for a while - do any of you remember this spot from the days of our youth?

Yes, I am sure many of you do. And then, with the advent of citizen band (CB) radio, you could place orders in advance. Wow! Technology at its best! Well, it was for us back then - no tweets or twits or whatever they call these new fangdagled things the young people use, and some older ones too. The lighting in this car park was 400 W HPS tubular lamps in cast aluminium bodies. They lit up the car park very nicely.

On the street light side of things, LEDs are being tested in many areas with varied success. I will keep you posted when I have more news on this.

The functions are still going well and please feel free to bring along new persons who you think would be interested. They are always welcome. We also welcome your suggestions on what functions you would prefer and on functions we would be interested in.

It is always a pleasure to receive articles for the news bulletins from you, our members, so take advantage of this opportunity and brag about your company or staff - hey, a little free advertising is always good!

To all of you who send me e-mails on a variety of topics, thanks! And to those who have commented on our news bulletin, thank you too, it is always great to hear from our members and constructive criticism is appreciated.

See you all soon.

Feedback on the Eighth IESSA AGM and Conference, Cathedral Peak Hotel, Drakensburg 2012

Eskom: "Please convey my thanks and regards to the committee for the opportunity to present a paper and exhibit at your conference." - Andrew Etzinger.

Cosine Developments: "It was very well organised and the venue was spectacular - world class. My suggestion is that the proceedings should have been printed." - Striling Marais.

Leviton: "It was a good conference and we met many key people from the lighting industry. It was good to see Eskom's presence. Perhaps we should include municipalities and government in future?" - Motaz Al-Batta.

Radiant Lighting and Electrical: "An extremely well organised and brilliantly hosted conference. It was a great experience to mingle with some of the top role players in the local and international lighting industries" - William Blackbeard.

Philips Lighting SA: "The organisation was very good and the setting was stunning. Thank you very much for organising this event." - Jacques Sergent.

LED Lighting: "It was superb. The venue and the openness, sharing and warmth of the members are unique to the yearly event." - Pierre van Helden.

R&H Rail: "I would be nitpicking to fault the paper content, conference lay-out, and accommodation. We could do with more delegates from government, municipalities, Eskom, regulatory bodies, mining houses and industry, though." - Bruce Janse van Rensburg.
