SYNOPSIS

Decarbonising energy will require a radical transformation of the global energy system, with major improvements to energy efficiency, and shifting from today's use of fossil fuels to use of zero carbon energy such as renewables and nuclear power, and capturing of carbon emissions. This impacts on all uses of energy, and potentially could result in greater electrification of transport and other end uses. Every country will find a different response according to their circumstances and natural endowments, and for many (including South Africa) there will be both opportunities and threats. The lecture will explore these issues in an energy system context, and focus particularly on the contribution of renewable energy, the development of renewable energy projects in South Africa, and the challenges of managing an electric power system with significant renewable energy generation.
