The route via Sterkfontein Dam down Oliviershoek Pass is the shortest BUT the road is mostly dug up and in a bad condition (until you hit the pass). The distance from Harrismith to Cathedral Peak Hotel via this route is 126 km.

You also save R90+ on toll fees.Cathedral Hero

The alternate route is on the N3 via Van Reenen's Pass and then turn right on the R616 towards Bergville.

I have travelled both routes doing a site visit and if you go slowly I would still recommend the Sterkfontein route provided you drive slowly.

The last 30 km of the route is pockmarked with potholes some really big ones at that!

Please book your accommodation direct with the Cathedral Peak Hotel.

Panel discussion - "Lighting and energy savings in SA. Are we an industry in disarray?"

Panel Chairperson :  Trevor Milne

Panel : Chris Yelland
            Greg Marcia
            Andrea Barausse
            Robert Henderson

The following will be addressed:

  • NRCS - What can be done about LOA or the lack thereof? Typically no valid LOA for CFL's so how can we be selling them, and how can ESKOM put out an enquiry to tender?
  • Approval of retrofit assemblies T5 by NRCS using inappropriate documentation and test reports.
  • Unqualified people making decisions or obfuscating the decision process.
  • NRCS takes money from levies but does no sample testing to ensure compliance. Should NRCS not have a testing contract with the relevant Test labs in which a minimum number of samples will be tested per year?
  • Lighting and Energy savings:- ESKOM encourages changing to more efficient technologies they even pay people to change. They promote retrofitting of luminaires but do they ensure that the installation is safe and compliance with the OHSA act etc? What verification is undertaken that the money is well spent?
  • ESKOM gives away LED replacement for reflector lamps. Are they interfering in the economy? What about the local industry who do this as a type of thing for a living why are they taking their livelihood away?
  • Standards and Regulations:- If we don't have proper standards and regulations how can we test for compliance and what is the way forward?

STUDENT ATTENDING IESSA CONGRESS & AGM

Randolf Wenhold, an electronic engineering student from the University of Pretoria, has Randolf Avatarapproached IESSA because of his personal interest in the lighting field, and as a member of the executive committee of the University of Pretoria's Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch responsible for marketing.

The student branch would like to have an informal meeting with IESSA or a presentation on a topic of IESSA's choice. Arrangements for such a meeting will be done in the near future.

In the meantime, IESSA has decided to invite Randolf to attend the eighth Congress and AGM with all expenses paid by IESSA.

Randolf is a member of the IEEE Student Society at the University of Pretoria (Tuks). The student branch hosts speakers from all disciplines to inform students about the work and environments in which we will perform our duties as engineers.

It is the society's aim to expose their members to as diverse a community as possible and to regularly host workshops to increase their skill sets. They also inform the students of their responsibilities as future engineers to commit to a process of life-long learning and, since ECSA requires CPD Points, they offer them the opportunity to join a community which shares that goal.
