We are considering using buses to transport delegates from Durban and Pretoria / Johannesburg to the Cathedral Peak Hotel, and the cost will be approximately Cathedral Peak Alberts & reception exterior
R600 per person return.

Please let Sue Swash know
by 15 March 2012 latest via email (info@iessa.org.za) or
Tel: 011 476 4171 if you would consider this option so that we can see whether it is feasible.

The route via Sterkfontein Dam down Oliviershoek Pass is the shortest BUT the road is mostly dug up and in a bad condition (until you hit the pass). The distance from Harrismith to Cathedral Peak Hotel via this route is 126 km.

You also save R90+ on toll fees.Cathedral Hero

The alternate route is on the N3 via Van Reenen's Pass and then turn right on the R616 towards Bergville. The distance from Harrismith is approx 193 km.

I have travelled both routes doing a site visit and if you go slowly I would still recommend the Sterkfontein route provided you drive slowly.

The last 30 km of the route is pockmarked with potholes some really big ones at that! AND
cows laying in the road!

Please book your accommodation direct with the Cathedral Peak Hotel.

from Matthew Hogg MBA EngTech AMILP, Member at Large.

I am writing to extend my thanks to IESSA, the South African equivalent of the ILP, for their hospitality throughout my recent stay in Cape Town.  I am currently travelling the world with my partner Clare after working at Nottingham City Council and Atkins for the past eight years.

We have been on the road for eight months and recently spent some time in Cape Town.

We were both amazed at how beautiful the city is and so made the decision to stay on a bit longer than planned.  So to make the best use of my time I decided to get to know their lighting industry a little better.

Through links on the ILP website, I tracked down Chris Brown of BEKA Ltd (part of the Schreder Group) who represents IESSA for the Western Cape province and asked if he could assist me.  In no time he had organised a day on the road with him, a day at the local government offices, a day with a contractor and finally I met a few of his clients working in consultancies, such as WSP and Arup.   The visit was excellent and although their lighting industry isn't as mature as the UK's, it is structured almost identically.

As well as Chris,  I would also like to thank Shaun Kemp, the lighting engineer responsible for Cape Town.

This appeared in the December 2011 // Lighting Journal on page 5.

Introductory lighting course

The Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA) is presenting its well known training course, "Introduction to lighting", which has been accredited by ECSA with two CPD points

This course will further the knowledge of those who would like to obtain a better understanding of illumination engineering.

Although not a prerequisite for other IESSA courses, this course will assist those undertaking other, more specialised courses or any other studies on lighting.
