Development Committee report

Chairperson: Valdi PereiraDevelopment Committee 2011

Firstly, I would like to thank all members of the Development Committee for the dedication and hard work that they contributed over the past year. For the last twelve months, it has prepared lighting courses for the Industry with remarkable attendance. We started in 2010 with a RELUX lighting software course held at Eskom's Research and Development facilities at Rocherville with 17 delegates attending. This year we presented the Energy Efficient Lighting Design course attended by 15 delegates; the Introductory Lighting course presented in March was attended by 28 delegates and in June we presented the Lighting School at NMISA's Pretoria facilities. The Durban branch Development Committee presented the Introductory Lighting course, attended by 24 delegates. After all these lighting courses the Development Committee is proud to contribute a R116 500 profit to IESSA.

The discontinuation of the correspondence course, which has been in operation for over 20 years, was a difficult decision. To keep the material updated for the number of students that attended the course does not warrant the effort and cost of continual revision.

The Development Committee is preparing different lighting courses for the present demand by the industry such as Lighting in Industry, a specialised course in photometry, Dialux Software Lighting Design, Lighting in the Renewable Energy Field and photometry of LEDs. There is a variety of courses being presented such as Exterior Lighting, Shop and Retail and Emergency Lighting.

I hope that the Lighting fraternity in South Africa will continue to support IESSA in the development of lighting.

Thank you

Valdi Pereira

Dear Lighting Friends,

Wow, 2011 is almost history. What a year it's been.

As most of you are now aware IESSA Cape Town is up and running. A few obstacles needed to be overcome but thanks to the enthusiastic support of many we have everything to look forward to.

We have successfully staged the AGM and with it a presentation by Gideon Naudé on the progress made nationally toward the regulation of standards for various LED products.

In October a presentation and explanation from two hardworking members of the office of the National Regulator for Compulsory Standards helped those attending to a clearer understanding of the requirements of and issues around the Letter of Authority (LoA) as far as lighting products are concerned.

The development sub-committee has great plans for 2012 and these will be announced shortly.

Several courses are in the pipeline and I am sure they will be well attended as usual.

There is a thirst for knowledge in the lighting field and the great speed of development of solid state lighting means that one cannot stop learning.

As lighting technology converges with the digital age we will need to accommodate and educate the new players, many of whom lack lighting knowledge. Those who are serious and willing to learn will survive, many will only create confusion.

Our development and membership focus will be to attract the former to our ranks. It is vital to the future of the lighting industry as it moves deeper into the 21st century to foster the ideals for good quality lighting and all that it really means. The alternative is mediocrity in our lighting environment to the detriment of all.

From Cape Town we send season's greetings and wish you all a prosperous and healthy 2012!

EE Energy Company of the Year

Energywise Systems Magnet Electrical Supplies from KwaZulu-Natal received the Southern African Association for Energy Efficiency (SAEE) Energy Company of the Year Award at a ceremony during the annual SAEE Banquet on 16 November 2011.

The banquet, held at Emperor's Palace in Gauteng, marked the opening of the sixth Southern African Energy Efficiency Convention and Exhibition (SAEEC2011). Energywise also received the Best Single Exhibition Stand Award for its display of water and energy saving devices.

Together with Magnet Electrical Supplies, Energywise Systems is listed on the Eskom IDM website as the authorised supplier of 16 different energy efficient showerheads. This collaboration, together with a reputation for providing reliable and efficient products to the residential and commercial markets in South Africa, has afforded the team a performance contract with Eskom for the largest showerhead roll-out in the country to date.

End-users are at times exposed to negative experiences with energy inefficient products sold as "green" items. This "greenwashing" has become a common problem, placing the development of the energy efficiency sector at risk. Energywise Systems owner Andrea Barausse identified a need to make tried-and-tested products available to the South African market. He has become well-known for his passion in investigating water and energy saving devices over the past four years and has executed practical experiments in his laboratory to find products that deliver optimal energy and water savings.

This initiative is projected to reduce the demand for energy from the national grid by 330 GWh, or 110 GWh a year.

"With such a contribution to the future sustainability of South Africa's energy supply," said SAEE president Prof. LJ Grobler, "Energywise Systems Magnet Electrical Supplies are worthy winners of the Energy Company of the Year Award."

He stressed the importance of such projects in meeting the country's energy efficiency targets and enhancing the future sustainability of the national grid.
