IESSA eNewsletter Aug 2011

The lighting industry of South Africa is represented by the

Illumination Engineering Society of South Africa (IESSA)

South African experts on various topics in the lighting technology field serve on the

CIE international committees responsible for the the development of

standards for the different aspects of illumination.

IESSA represents South African internationally and thereby acts as the
National Committee of the CIE (Commition Internationale De L'Eclairage).

IESSA AGM - 25 August 2011

The IESSA AGM will be held on 25 August 2011 at the Morningside Country Club, Rivonia at 17h00 for 17h30. The AGM will be followed by a braai sponsored by IESSA and a cash bar will be available.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

27th CIE Session, Sun City

For those of us fortunate enough to attend the 27th Session of the CIE Congress, it was certainly an interesting and wonderful experience.

The programme read something like this: General Assembly

Sunday - The General Assembly was held with delegates from the different national committees of the member countries.

Sunday evening - Dr. Franz Hengstberger (CIE president) and Trevor Milne (IESSA president) welcomed everyone to a cocktail party sponsored by IESSA.

Monday morning - The congress was formally opened by Dr. Tshenge Demana from the DTI and Dr. Franz Hengstberger. The MC for the week was Derrich Gardner and he did a sterling job. We were treated to a performance from the well travelled UMOJA dancers. The international guests were enthralled and their cameras snapped away!

Technical meetings were held throughout the day. International guests were mainly scientists and university students.

Greg, Trevor, Enock

Ormazabal

Monday evening - The Bush Boma Braai (cultural evening ) - and here we have to give big thanks to the following sponsors:

Congress Sponsors

Eskom for the wonderful blanket wraps "Unplug and be snug"! Boy did we need these as it was rather chilly... Luckily the skies were clear and the guests just loved looking at the stars!

Beka, Eurolux, Light-Be Lighting, Tridonic and Light-Be Constructionwho all sponsored the drumming session. This was a big hit with the delegates and quite a few mentioned that their fingers were rather painful the next morning! They certainly gave it stick. The South African wine was a "big hit" as well.

Enock Zikalala proceeded to give the delegates some history behind IESSA from the ILESA, SALA & SANCI days. Our delegates just loved the "big Zulu man"!

Tuesday morning - Technical meetings and poster sessions were very interesting.  We need to have some of these poster sessions at our next IESSA Congress. Short and to the point!

Some of the guests went on afternoon and evening bush drives in the Pilanesberg and the Eskom blankets were to be seen everywhere. Guests were surprised by a room drop of the Eurolux keyring torches.

Wednesday morning - Ormazabal Technical meetings and more poster sessions.

In the evening the Gala Dinner was a huge success with "Nadine" (who is appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar at present) as our entertainer. Nadine was certainly very popular and everyone at the gala evening wanted a photo with her.  In fact she was extremely popular with our Flemish visitors as she will be recording in Belgium shortly!

It was a real treat watching the delegates dancing the night away!Don, Linda, Rob We were politely asked to leave the ballroom just after midnight. Some die-hards from the IESSA council promptly went on to a night club with some of the international delegates and partied until 3 am!

Ann Webb, the incoming President of the CIE is a delightful person to talk to and really knows how to party up a storm. She said this congress would be a hard one to follow. IESSA wishes Ann every success in her new position.

Thursday morning - Technical meetings - and sadly for some of us, time to pack up and head home. Radiant Lighting caps were handed out to delegates and suddenly there were Radiant caps everywhere.

A farewell function was held in the evening and a thank you to the IESSA PR Committee was given by IESSA President, Trevor Milne.

Friday morning - Technical meetings

Friday afternoon - Whoever was left had to head home in the hope that they would make it in spite of the current fuel shortage.

Conclusion - The 27th Session of the CIE has been in the making since 2007 and has taken a lot of time and effort and has certainly proved worthwhile with IESSA making a huge success out of this! The IESSA PR Committee would like to thank all the sponsors, exhibitors, delegates (both international and local), who attended this congress and the Bliss team who organised this memorable event.

Some feedback on the technical side of the 27th Session of the CIE Congress, Sun City

The technical side of the conference was great, with good content and presentation. This was said by Murray Cronje, CIE SA representative. The theme for the congress was LEDs and Mesopic Vision.

The CIE committees have laboured for nearly 5 years to come up with an application guideline on how to apply rules on mesopic lighting. To date there is still no guideline.

The CIE board is encouraging acceleration of the drafting of standards and test methods for LEDs because of the pace at which they are developed. Global Lighting and Zarga are working on standards for LEDs. They represent 5000 manufacturers.

On the Architectural Lighting side - Chairman Andre Tammes from Australia has proposed that members of the committee not write reports but rather pay a writer. This is a first.

With regard to colour rendering, LED experts say that an index is not applicable. A colour rendering nCRI model must be amended or even a CQS model would be more accurate.

An interesting workshop on lighting for the elderly and visual impaired was held with no conclusion being reached because of the complex different visual problems. Different lighting is needed for different visual problems. Investigation is ongoing.

By 2020 5% of all cars will have LED headlights. Running LED day lights, LEDs for rear lighting, brakes, indicators but not for main headlights are already available. These will be incorporated in some kind of motorised control. When approaching an oncoming car the pattern will automatically change to "shape around" the oncoming car.

With regard to blue LEDs. These fall under class 0 or 1. They are basically safe and will not pose a retinal hazard from the blue light content, 0 being totally safe and 1 a very slight chance of causing any hazards.

Energy efficient indicators - these are used in 5 countries. Interestingly enough in Spain the use of an Energy Efficiency label is mandatory and if you do not meet the threshold of the indicators you can be imprisoned.

Ek het Suid-Afrika geniet! Die landskap, die Afrikaanse taal, die safari en later ook die Vortrekker Monument. Dit was altyd my droom en eindelik was ek daar.
