The importance of labeling
by John Stoddard, Electrobase
Recently, I bought a Janus Coupler from my local hardware chain. The coupler was of poor quality with poor markings and no instructions. I could have exercised my rights under the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) and demanded my money back. This item and the way it was sold contravened that act... (more) |
JBCC contract price adjustment provisions (CPAP)
The formula adjustment provisions provide for the needs of contractors who require a clear-cut, agreed escalation recovery formula method to avoid dissension and disputes with employers and subcontractors and to provide reasonable reimbursement of price fluctuations. A workable formula method of contract price adjustment simplifies accounting procedures and generally provides for acceptable reimbursement... ( more) |
Recipe for theft cases (part two)
by Shantonette Naidoo, ECA
When leading evidence to prove the theft was committed, one should highlight some critical points such as how honesty goes to the heart of the employment relationship between the employer and employee, and how, as a result of the theft, it has broken down and hence the employee cannot be trusted... CFLs: how safe are they? Information from IESSA
Eskom has rolled out 43-million "energy saving lamps" across the country, resulting in a stated saving of 1800 MW. But what about safety? Ever since the advent of the CFL, concerns have been raised about mercury content, radiation and emissions of "dangerous vapours" alike... ( more) |
Reassessing CFLs
by James Thomas Duff, ILP
Some research set out to investigate whether CFLs are an adequate, suitable and appropriate replacement for incandescent lamps in domestic environments. The main areas examined were power factor and total harmonic distortion, as well as efficacy, lumen output, embodied energy, lamp life, colour rendering/colour temperature, mercury content/recycling and a number of other factors... Walls of light - OLEDs make an appearance
Information from Siemens
Organic LEDs (OLEDs) are extremely thin and lightweight surface-emitting lights that will radically change the way we provide illumination. Although mostly confined to labs, OLED technology is moving toward commercialisation... (more)

IEC 61439 low voltage switchboards manufactured locally
Information from Motor Control Automation
IEC 61439 has eliminated the discrimination between type-tested assemblies (TTA) and PTTA by the Design Verification approach. The three main verification methods introduced in IEC 61439 are verification by testing; verification by calculation/measurement; and verification by design rules... (more)

Electric vehicles become electronic
by Dr. Peter Harrop, IDTechEx
The family car has much more than satellite navigation, phone, proximity sensors and other electronics directly assisting the driver. The MEMS accelerometer controlling the air bags, for instance, is one of an increasing number of out-of-sight safety and other measures controlled by circuitry... (more) |
Making permanent savings through "active energy efficiency"
Information from APC by Schneider Electric
For many, energy measures revolve around the consideration of thermal issues in the building's fabric. Applied techniques include remedies such as insulation, glazing, and heat loss counter-measures. For others, it is lighting, albeit often limited to merely installing low energy consumption systems. Those with significant heating requirements may see efficient boiler systems as the answer... Domestic application of a PV system
by GA Keen, Independent, and PJ Lloyd, Energy Institute, CPUT
A home in Cape Town was equipped with 3,8 kWp photo-voltaic panels and associated inverter and batteries. During the first year of operation, it was found that the PV panels delivered 6431 kWh at an average capacity factor of 19,3%. The house demand of 3129 kWh was met partly by the PV panels, partly by the batteries (666 kWh) and partly by the grid (978 kWh)... (more)

The effective operator
by Hongyu Pei Breivold, Martin Olausson, Susanne Timsjö, Magnus Larsson, Roy Tanner, ABB
Operator effectiveness is a fundamental element for sustaining the economic value of process control and management. It can be improved by empowering operators through improved situational awareness and better handling of abnormal conditions. Operators can then make better decisions and so improve process safety and process uptime... ( more) |
WLAN process control solution for petrochemical plant
Shell Eastern Petroleum recently completed an ethylene cracker complex in Singapore. This is the first time in the oil and gas industry that wireless technology has been deployed to get mobile access to a process control system... (more)

Earth testing without the stake
Information supplied by Megger, represented locally by Surgetek
Stakeless testing is one of many methods of measuring earth electrode resistance, but what sets it apart is that it does not require the use of auxiliary test electrodes or test leads. Since many earth electrodes are often surrounded by concrete or tarmac, this is a real benefit... (more)

SA's first solar thermal chilled water system
Information from Voltas Technologies
In 2008, an absorption chiller range was imported to SA. In September the following year, SA's first solar thermal driven chilled water system with a cooling capacity of 35 kW was installed as a pilot solar air-conditioning project on the roof of the Netcare Moot Hospital in Pretoria... (more) |
Solar water heaters: the vital role of the timer switch
Information from Eskom
The electric elements in solar systems serve as a back-up heating option in times of cloudy or rainy weather. Should timers not be installed to control these elements, neither the utility nor the customer would benefit from Eskom's solar water heater initiative... ( more) |
Mechatronics: Top five mechanical considerations for electrical engineers
by Jared Mann, Bosch Rexroth
Mechanical and electrical engineers often overlook important issues when specifying their respective parts of an electromechanical system. Here are five good pieces of advice for electrical engineers responsible for electromechanical systems, as provided by a mechanical engineer... ( more) |
