BACKGROUND

Government has confirmed that IPPs will in time generate 30% of South Africa's electricity. IRP 2010 - 2030 has been promulgated. The key to the efficient utilisation of IPPs is an Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) as proposed by the Department of Energy in a recent Draft Bill that is out for public comment before being submitted to parliament.

Through the conference, the FMF hopes to advance the implementation of the ISMO as proposed by the Department of Energy. We will explore alternative grid models from the US, UK, Noordpool, India and elsewhere; consider appropriate grid options for South Africa; and garner the viewpoints of key role-players (business, labour, Eskom, EIUG, SAIPPA and others).

The SAIEE President's Invitation Lecture

The South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) invites you to the SAIEE President's Invitation Lecture, entitled:

The liquidity boom and its impact on commodity prices and South Africa

by Dr. Azar Jammine

DATE: Thursday 26 May 2011
TIME: 18h30 for 19h00
VENUE: Waterford Room, School of Tourism & Hospitality, The Kerzner Building, Bunting Road, Auckland Park, University of Johannesburg

COST: No cost, free-of-charge, including cocktail party after the lecture

SYNOPSIS

Attempts at resurrecting the global economy from the deep financial recession of 2008/09 have taken the form of massive additions of liquidity into the global financial system. Together with ongoing high growth in emerging markets, this has contributed towards an alarming increase in commodity prices, especially that of energy. The inflationary consequences could prove global and domestic economic forecasts - that see solid growth continuing in the longer term - as unduly optimistic. This could fairly dramatically influence not only the exchange rate, inflation rate and interest rate, but also the country's ability to generate the jobs envisaged in the government's New Growth Path. At the same time, should the attempts at keeping the world economy afloat remain intact, South Africa and Africa stand to be major beneficiaries of what is emerging as a commodity super cycle.

BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER

Dr. Azar Jammine is director and chief economist of Econometrix, an independent South African economic research, consultancy and forecasting company, established in 1982. Dr. Jammine has established a significant profile in South Africa as analyst and commentator on domestic and international economic affairs. In this capacity he has also been invited over the years by several corporations to serve as independent non-executive director. Dr. Jammine obtained a BSc (Hons) in mathematical statistics and a BA (Hons) in economics at Wits University, followed by an MSc in economics at the London School of Economics and a PhD at the London Business School.
