Smart Grid Workshop |

You are cordially invited to attend an informative workshop and course, hosted by Enerweb in association with EE Publishers, entitled: Smart Grid: The great potential & even greater challenge presented by Dr. Perry Sioshansi, president, Menlo Energy Economics; editor and publisher, EEnergy Informer DATE: 7 December 2010 TIME: 08h30 to 13h00 VENUE: Newton's Restaurant, Eskom Megawatt Park, Sunninghill, Sandton COST: R500 per person attending Download the printable registration form (0,26 MB PDF file) Download the workshop brochure (0,63 MB PDF file) BACKGROUND AND SYNOPSIS Within the electric power sector there is growing and universal interest in smart meters, smart grid and implementation of dynamic pricing. While the motivations and the specifics vary, there are many similarities in the expectations for what smart grid can deliver. This workshop will explore the origins and motivations for the smart grid and its evolution in the past few years, and will provide an overview of what experts believe it should entail, namely a grid that is:
- More integrated
- Accommodates more distributed generation (DG)
- Incorporates more intermittent renewable energy resources, back-up generation and/or storage technologies
- Incorporates demand response
- Can manage large numbers of electric vehicles (EVS) or hybrids over time, including the potential for "vehicle-to-grid (V2G)" technology
- Can handle an increasing number of "zero net energy (ZNE)" homes and buildings over time
- Is increasingly "two-way"
- Is capable of delivering sophisticated types of dynamic pricing schemes to smart devices, thereby enabling the so-called prices-to- devices" revolution
Drawing from the contents of a forthcoming book on the same topic, the workshop is interspersed with empirical evidence from a number of on-going smart grid and dynamic pricing projects in North America.
Participants will receive a handout with a complete set of slides presented at the workshop. PROGRAMME 08h30: Registration and morning tea at Newton's Restaurant 09h00: Welcome, background and introduction of the workshop facilitator, by Rob Surtees, MD of Enerweb 09h30: Session 1: Inception and evolution of Smart Grid 10h15: Session 2: Integration of renewable energy and distributed generation into the grid 11h00: Morning tea break 11h15: Session 3: Dynamic pricing and demand response 12h00: Session 4: Empirical evidence and anecdotal examples 12h45: Discussion and course wrap-up 13h00: Closure BRIEF CV OF THE PRESENTER AND FACILITATOR Dr. Perry Sioshansi is president of Menlo Energy Economics, a consulting firm based in San Francisco, California, serving the energy sector. He is an internationally recognised expert in the fields of demand side management, demand response and smart grids. He is the editor and publisher of EEnergy Informer, a monthly newsletter with international circulation and is regularly featured in The Electricity Journal. He has degrees in engineering and economics, including an MSc and PhD in economics from Purdue University. His latest book "Smart grid: Integrating renewable, distributed and efficient energy" is forthcoming in 2011. Call for public input by NERSA:
Implementation rules with respect to the draft IRP 2010 |
Section 4 (a) (iv) of the Electricity Regulation Act, 2006, instructs the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) to "issue rules designed to implement the national government's electricity policy framework, the integrated resource plan, and this Act" NERSA has therefore prepared an Issues Paper, and is now soliciting public input and view on the issues related to the implementation of the draft National Integrated Resource Plan for Electricity, IRP 2010, as well as the respective roles of those involved in that implementation process.
NERSA also aims to investigate how government policy and the Integrated Resource Plan will work together to bring about a coherent and structured implementation process so that IRP 2010 can be accomplished smoothly and efficiently.
Click here to download the Issues Paper for the IRP 2010 implementation rules The major issues covered in the Issues Paper are:
- Allocation of the responsibilities for the Implementation of the IRP
- Private sector procurement process
- Public sector process
- Procedure when no suitable response is received for a technology in the "Integrated Resource Plan"
- Procedure for unsolicited bids
- Own generation
- Independent system and market operator (ISMO)
- Power conservation programme (PCP) rules
Stakeholders are asked to comment in writing on the Proposed Rules Issues Paper. Written comments can be forwarded
by email to: IRP_RULES@nersa.org.za;
or hand-delivered to: 526 Vermeulen Street, Arcadia, Pretoria;
or posted to: P O Box 40343, Arcadia, 0083, Pretoria, South Africa. The closing date for the comments is 10 December 2010 at 16h00 Stakeholders will also have an opportunity to present their views on the Issues Paper at the Public Hearings on the IRP2010 co-hosted with the Department of Energy, scheduled in Johannesburg on 2 and 3 December 2010, at Bytes Convention Centre Johannesburg as announced by the Department of Energy for the IRP 2010 public hearings. For further information and queries, please contact Bianka Belinska or Charles Geldard at NERSA, Tel: 012 401-4600; Fax: 012 401-4700
