SANEA Johannesburg lecture |
In business we are familiar with the concept of "return on investment". This is what drives much of our decision-making. However a new pressure is emerging that will play an increasingly important part in our analysis of business opportunities and business performance...
On behalf of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), you are invited to attend an evening lecture in Johannesburg, entitled:
ENERGY RETURN ON ENERGY INVESTED
presented by Dr. Chris Cooper, corporate planner at CEF (Central Energy Fund), and SANEA board member DATE: Tuesday 21 September 2010
Refreshments and snacks will be served before and after the lecture, and there is ample opportunity for networking with friends, colleagues and energy professionals.
Come and join the energy professionals at SANEA for an evening of provocation and challenge, to learn more about energy options for South Africa, debate the issues, and get some answers! SYNOPSIS The presentation will focus on Energy Returns on Energy Investments (EROEI). Some commentators believe this to have been in excess of 100 : 1 for oil from the supergiant oilfields, particularly of the Middle East, while new fields are believed to have EROEIs of only around 15 : 1. We need to consider our ability to maintain and grow energy flows at a time when resource quantities and qualities are declining. Stresses are also becoming evident in coal and gas. Most alternative energies have an EROEI of below 10 : 1. For bioethanol from maize a ratio of 1,8 : 1 is considered excellent. Some preliminary analyses indicate that it will not be possible for us to maintain the current industrial society at ratios below a level of 10 : 1. If this estimate is correct then serious effort will be required to understand the implications on society and how we need to restructure economies.
BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER Dr. Chris Cooper has been involved in World Energy Council (WEC) activities since 1986 when he became a member of SANCWEC, the predecessor of SANEA. SANEA Cape Town lecture |
Building power plants of 20 000 MW is a major productive infrastructure programme - it will be a powerful catalyst for economic growth and social development. Built over 15 years, it will allow producing electricity for at least 60 more years at predictable cost. But the first interest of a base load program will be to provide electricity to the population and the industry at an affordable price, allowing the strong development of the country (government is proposing a 7% GDP growth).
On behalf of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), you are invited to attend an evening lecture in Durban, entitled: THE NUCLEAR PROGRAMME IS A TRUE OPPORTUNITY FOR SOUTH AFRICA presented by Dr. Yves Guenon, managing director, Areva South Africa
DATE: Wednesday 22 September 2010 TIME: 17h30 for 18h00 VENUE: Engen Petroleum Conference Centre, Ground Floor, Engen Court, Thibault Square, cnr. Riebeeck and Long St, Cape Town COST: Free-of-charge, including drinks and snacks Please click here to register online Refreshments and snacks will be served before and after the lecture, and there is ample opportunity for networking with friends, colleagues and energy professionals.
Come and join the energy professionals at SANEA for an evening of provocation and challenge, to learn more about energy options for South Africa, debate the issues, and get some answers! SYNOPSIS The nuclear programme is an opportunity to boost growth at times of economic downturn, create hundreds of thousands of permanent jobs, develop vibrant, high-tech industries and research capacities, improve balance of trade from value-added products, and meet future electricity demand in an environmentally friendly, affordable way. A nuclear programme will oblige us to train not only post-graduates and engineers but also technicians, artisans and workers. The quality requirements of nuclear industry necessitate the highest skills in all competencies, thus creating skilled and well compensated jobs. Skills developed during the course of development of the nuclear programme are portable and will benefit greatly to other technology intensive and specialised industries in South Africa. Skills development in partnership with universities will also lead to more R&D capacity in South Africa.
