RENEWABLE ENERGY IN SA
Initiatives, opportunities, challenges and innovation
You, your friends, colleagues and all interested persons are cordially invited to attend a free symposium at the University of Cape Town.
The event is presented by the University of Cape Town and is co-hosted by the IET South Africa Network and the IEEE South Africa Section in association with EE Publishers.
DATE: Thursday 24 June 2010 TIME: 09h30 for 10h00, to 17h00 VENUE: Dept of Elec Eng, Upper Campus, University of Cape Town COST: No cost, free-of-charge, including lunch and light refreshments
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The recent energy crisis highlighted the need for a diversity of electricity generation technologies in South Africa. Furthermore, the difficulty experienced by Eskom in securing World Bank funding for the completion of Medupi, and SA government's decision to withdraw funding from the Pebble-bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) nuclear programme, reinforces the need for alternatives to fossil-fuel based electricity generation. These factors, together with the current progress on the Renewable Energy Feed-In Tarriff (REFIT) has created significant interest in renewable energy generation for SA. Opportunities also exist for innovative solutions to the SA's unique challenges. The objective of this seminar is to convey the strategic framework and direction for renewables in South Africa today. This would be achieved by understanding the following: - DoE's policies, targets and initiatives for Renewables in South Africa
- DST's initiatives for supporting research and innovation in this sector
- SANERI's new mandate in transforming to SANEDI
- Current research and international collaboration relating to this sector
