Two SANEA lectures in Johannesburg: "Experiencing true smart grids"
and
"High performance vertical axis wind turbines" |
On behalf of the South African National Energy Association (SANEA), and EE Publishers, you are invited to attend two evening presentations in Johannesburg, as follows:
DATE: Tuesday 16 February 2010 TIME: 17h30 for 18h00 VENUE: Sasol Auditorium, 1 Sturdee Ave, Rosebank, Johannesburg COST: Free of charge, including drinks and snacks
Refreshments and snacks will be served before and after the lecture, and there is ample opportunity for networking with friends, colleagues and energy professionals. Come and join the energy professionals at SANEA for an evening of provocation and challenge, to learn more about energy options for South Africa, debate the issues, and get some answers!
As South Africa strives to ensure energy security for all while being sensitive to the need to be environmentally responsible, it is important to consider all energy options. SANEA continues its deliberations to introduce new operational efficiencies and alternative energy options...
PRESENTATION 1: EXPERIENCING TRUE SMART GRIDS by Jonathan de Magalhães,
managing director of Pre-Plan Energy
SYNOPSIS Experience a typical "day in the life" of someone, set in a few years time, as every device from his electric car to dishwasher communicates with the power grid to make intelligent decisions based on energy efficiency, green energy generation, improve cost savings and even make some money in the process. How will the power grid need to evolve to support a truly intelligent infrastructure? A brief practical example will look at solutions already available now, to start creating intelligent and independent smart grid environments for communities in office parks and residential estates. BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER Jonathan de Magalhães is managing director of Pre-Plan Energy, a company providing integrated renewable energy solutions for domestic, commercial and turnkey projects - both local and into Africa. Jonathan has a passion to educate and excite people around the possibilities of using green energy and improved energy efficiency as a differentiator, rather than just a backup option to the national power grid. Jonathan is also a Green Star SA Accredited Professional with the Green Building Council of South Africa, and is also a member of SANEA and SESSA.
PRESENTATION 2: HIGH PERFORMANCE VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINES (VAWT) by Jan Jooste,
Vaal University of Technology
SYNOPSIS Various forces are at play to increase the importance of alternative energies. The tragedy is that alternative energies, including wind energy systems, are overly dependent upon subsidies. An escape from the subsidy trap might be for vertical axis wind turbines) to be reconfigured such that each blade sweeps at a different level. Initial studies indicate that this method increases energy harvested by approximately 300% - using essentially the same aerodynamic components as before. BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER Jan Jooste qualified as an industrial engineer at the University of Pretoria as well as Wits. He also attained an MsL at UNISA. He worked as consulting engineer, production superintendent and entrepreneur. Product development steered him to the Vaal University of Technology where he now stimulates innovation amongst staff and students. He sees creativity and innovation as essential life skills and attempts to continually spread this gospel.
