As South Africa strives to ensure energy security for all of its people while being sensitive to the need to be environmentally responsible, it is important to consider all energy options. This lecture, promises to be insightful, thought-provoking and a highly relevant input to the national debate on our energy future. This event will set the tone for the SANEA programme for 2010 - a programme in which SANEA members will together explore the range of energy options open to us and the complex issues associated with the decisions that must be made. This is certainly a "must attend" event.

BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER

Apart from his years of achievement in Government where he played a major role in defining national innovation and science and technology policy, in recent years Rob has been instrumental in fundamentally redefining national nuclear energy policy. He has used his position as chief executive of Necsa as a platform for debate on the role that nuclear energy has to play in South Africa's future. He has defined an exciting vision of a nuclear industry in SA which adds value throughout the entire nuclear value chain - from uranium extraction to nuclear power generation. This vision has since been captured in a revised nuclear policy for SA which will have a major impact on the energy sector as well as on the South African economy in future years.

SYNOPSIS

The World Energy Council (WEC) has identified the transport sector as an area where there is still much to be done in terms of efficient and effective use of energy. One opportunity is in the use of alternative energy sources for motor vehicles, the most notable of these being electricity. The concept of electric vehicles is not new, but the innovation that is making this mode of transport viable on a large scale is certainly worth exploring. In particular, we have our own South African innovation and this lecture presents an opportunity to hear first hand what is being done to make electric vehicles viable in the South African context.
