Engineers are known for their love affair with cars, and this presentation provides some insight as to what the technology leaders in this business are thinking...

SYNOPSIS

Cars of the 21st century will incorporate a whole array of advanced technologies for improved performance, comfort, convenience, safety, fuel efficiency and environmental impact. These include state-of-the-art aerodynamic, material science, thermodynamic, combustion engine, electric drive, energy storage and energy conversion technologies, interlinked with sophisticated information and data communication technologies, sensors and electronics. Further advances in conventional petrol and diesel combustion engines appear set to lead on to innovative active hybrid drive systems, and then to electric, fuel cell and hydrogen vehicles of the future. Intelligent energy management systems incorporating the regeneration of electrical energy and the recovery of waste heat and brake energy, will lead to higher outputs and improved efficiency with lower emissions. Vehicle guidance systems will provide automatic parking controls, knowledge of the road ahead, and integration with intelligent traffic management systems. The goal of all this is sustainable mobility.

BRIEF CV OF GUY KILFOIL

Starting his career in publishing in 1998, Guy Kilfoil followed his passion for motoring, and at 25 was editor of Cars in Action magazine. DaimlerChrysler South Africa followed shortly thereafter when, in 2003, Kilfoil was appointed Media Manager: Chrysler & Jeep, where, he managed an award-winning international launch, resulting in promotion to Communications Manager: Mercedes Car Group. In 2005, he joined BMW South Africa, where he has spent a large part of the last four years serving as Manager: Automotive Communications. Concerned with the viability of modern day motor cars on the roads of the future, he presented "The Road to Sustainable Mobility" to both the Deloitte Partner's Conference and the Sanlam 80th Anniversary Director's conference in 2008. On 1 May 2009, Kilfoil was promoted to General Manager: Communications & Public Affairs, and at 32 he is one of the BMW Group's youngest ever general managers.

ENABLING THE REGULATORY ENVIRONMENT FOR IPPs

presented by Doug Kuni,
MD of the South African Independent Power Producers Association

DATE: Tuesday 15 September 2009
TIME: 17h30 for 18h00
VENUE: Sasol Auditorium, 1 Sturdee Ave, Rosebank, Johannesburg
COST: Free of charge, including drinks and snacks

Come and join the energy professionals at SANEA for an evening of provocation and challenge, to learn more about energy options for South Africa, debate the issues, and get some answers!

SYNOPSIS

The current environment for IPPs is examined with regard to the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA), the Department of Energy (DoE) and Eskom initiatives. NERSA has published a number of renewable energy tariff documents and the cost recovery mechanism for independent power producer (IPP) power purchase agreements (PPAs). The DoE has gazetted the new generation procurement regulations. Eskom's pilot national co-generation programme (PNCP) was a failure in terms of its objectives. Eskom has initiated (but now deferred) its co-generation medium term power purchase programme (MTPPP) and base load programme for lack of funding. This presentation examines the initiatives and conflicts which have arisen from these actions by government, NERSA and Eskom to facilitate the entry of IPPs into the South African power market. It also proposes solutions for the industry to unlock the potential of IPPs entering the power market.

BRIEF CV OF PRESENTER

Doug Kuni graduated as a mechanical engineer from London University, and joined Eskom in 1984, where he gained 15 years experience in the design, construction, commissioning, testing, operation and maintenance of large power stations. He was Eskom's corporate communications manager during the first democratic elections in South Africa in 1994. Thereafter Doug was involved at Eskom Enterprises doing power asset acquisitions in Africa. In 2004, he joined a Hong Kong based company acquiring supply chain assets in the power sector of China. In 2006, he returned to South Africa and joined IPSA plc as general manager, South Africa, and was responsible for the licensing of Newcastle Cogeneration (Pty) Ltd in 2008 to supply power into the grid. He is now an independent power sector consultant, consulting to major corporations in South Africa and abroad, and is the managing director of the newly formed South African Independent Power Producers Association (SAIPPA).
