Flavor of SLO logoUnited Way is once again partnering with six Cal Poly Communication Studies students to help facilitate their senior project into another successful event.  Enjoy tasting, sipping and live music at the Jack House and Gardens for the 4th Annual Flavor of SLO! Everyone over the age of 21 is invited to sample the best food and beverages from over 40 vendors on the Central Coast. The event takes place on Sunday, May 6th, from 1-4 p.m. All proceeds benefit United Way's mission of advancing education, income, and health. Tickets are $30/students, $45/non-students pre-sale, and $40/students, $55/non-students at the door. Volunteers will receive a complimentary ticket for two hours of their time helping with set-up or clean-up, or assisting vendors during the day. Tickets will be available soon via the upcoming 2012 Flavor of SLO website.

Grants Available & Volunteers Needed

Each spring, United Way receives grant applications from nonprofit organizations throughout the county for support from our Community Impact Fund Grant process. These requests, in the areas of education, income and health, help support local health and human service programs that keep our community strong, and residents healthy and safe.  Applications are reviewed by dedicated community members, who spend 10-15 hours during the month of April reading and discussing the proposals.  For more information about applying for a grant or volunteering to be a grant reader, visit our website or contact Kara Edwall at (805) 541-1234 or kedwall@unitedwayslo.org.

In the past 11 years, United Way has awarded over $2,000,000 through its Community Impact Fund Grant Awards to local nonprofit programs.

Youth Board Funds Youth Programs

The United Way of San Luis Obispo County Youth Board, a group of over forty students from seven high schools in the county, have awarded three grants to local youth-led programs. Program recipients are the Estero Bay Youth Coalition Fun Friday to help fund a day time event offering fun and educational booths during Spring Break; Restorative Partners to fund reading material for self-learning, book clubs and group discussion for incarcerated youth; Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County to fund a field trip that helps nurture relationships among program Youth Board photoparticipants. Thank you to the Youth Board members for their thoughtful consideration of how to improve education, income, and health for youth of the Central Coast.
