At United Way's Annual Recognition Event on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 local health and human service programs were recognized as recipients of 2011-2012 United Way Community Impact Fund Grants.  The competitive grant process takes place each spring, and utilizes over 30 volunteers who read and review the proposals.  This year a total of $75,000 was awarded to programs in the areas of education, income and health.  Click here for a complete list of award recipients.

GLEANSLO, a program of the Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County, was also recognized as the recipient of the 2011 Innovation Award.  GLEANSLO is a new consortium that unites farmers, health advocates, food providers, backyard gardeners, nonprofit agencies and community volunteers together to harvest and donate produce gleanings into San Luis Obispo County's food system.  The program contributed over 22,000 pounds of gleanings to the Food Bank Coalition's Harvest Bag Program, and it is anticipated that the amount will double this year as more people become aware of the program.  Click here for a complete list of past award recipients.  This award was sponsored by Don Maruska & Co. and IQMS, Inc

KidSpree

KidSpree 2011

On Sunday, July 24, 2011, the Kohl's stores in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria will all open their doors early to allow local children the chance to shop for back to school clothing.

Are you interested in volunteering? Volunteers are paired with each child, helping them choose correct sizes, and keeping track of the amount they've spent. Email  kidspree@unitedwayslo.org for more information.  Volunteers must be fingerprinted at least two weeks prior to the event.

Sponsor a child for just $100. Visit unitedwayslo.org to donate, or mail your donation, earmarked for "KidSpree" to our office.

Thank You to Our State Employees

In 2010 San Luis Obispo County State employees pledged

over $145,000 to nonprofits of their choice through the

California State Employees Charitable Campaign (CSECC).

This year we had 39 different state agencies participate.

We could not have been this successful without the hard

work the state agency Campaign Coordinators did onsite.

At our recent Annual Recognition Event we recognized two campaign coordinators with the Live United Award: Craig Dacus, Atascadero State Hospital, and Lori Marinello, California Department of Transportation.  As the Campaign Coordinators for Atascadero State Hospital (Craig) and Cal Trans (Lori), these award recipients have embraced the spirit of giving by holding kickoff meetings to encourage their managers and co-workers to participate and explain the power of the CSECC.

They know that when everyone gives just a little something, great things can happen, and for several years they have gone out of their way to be true leaders among the many state Campaign Coordinators in SLO County.  Congratulations Craig and Lori.
