Nonviolent Communication Workshops

NVCUnited Way is now offering an introductory course in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to support peaceful classrooms and communities. NVC is a concrete set of language and communication skills that transcend age boundaries and circumstances. This 6 week class series is designed for pre K-9 school teachers and parents. Participants are trained to help youth to:

  • Honestly express what they are feeling and needing in any situation
  • Recognize empathetic connection with what another is feeling and needing
  • Make clear, doable, present moment requests of what they would like
  • Effectively move a conversation step-by-step toward a win-win situation
  • Open a difficult conversation without implying blame
  • Express regret without beating themselves up in the process
  • Learn to hear what other students are really trying to say
  • Hear the needs behind challenging messages/behaviors, i.e. bullying

Fee is $150, and introductory classes include the book "Principles of Nonviolent Communication" by Marshall Rosenberg. Scholarships are available, and class size is limited. Learn more at unitedwayslo.org/NVC or by calling (805) 541-1234.

Money Talks 4 Teens

A good job and steady income are integral components of promoting financial stability and independence; but just as important is the ability to manage money appropriately to ensure stability and achieve savings goals.  To promote personal financial skills, United Way volunteers are teaching Money Talks 4 Teens in SLO County high school senior economics classes.

Created by the University of California Cooperative Extension, Money Talks uses interactive lessons and a hands-on approach to demonstrate the importance of making wise financial choices.  In class, students explore the role that good money management plays in achieving personal goals, and work with their peers to develop planning, goal setting and thoughtful decision-making skills.  Three lessons have already been taught at SLO High School this year, with plans to expand to additional schools in the future.  For more information, contact Kara Edwall at (805) 541-1234 or kedwall@unitedwayslo.org.

ACTION Report Available
Since 1998, ACTION for Healthy Communities has been reporting on the quality of life in San Luis Obispo County, measured by indicators in seven key areas: basic needs, the economy, education, health, our natural environment, public safety and the social environment. The published reports help identify specific needs of the county's most vulnerable populations, and help guide the work of many local nonprofit organizations, including United Way. ACTION for Healthy Communities is a cooperative, collaborative effort of individual agencies and organizations, public and private, that are committed to improving the overall quality of life in SLO County. The most recent report is available on our website.
