Volunteer opportunities abound! Get involved with KidSpree,  Stuff the School Bus, or Junior Achievement!

BANKKidSpree
Our annual children's shopping event has returned, with a new name and a new sponsor! We are proud to announce a brand new partnership between United Way of SLO County and Kohl's to welcome KidSpree to the Central Coast. The event will provide much needed back-to-school clothing for local economically-disadvantaged children.

KidSpreeOn Sunday, July 25, 2010, the Kohl's stores in Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo will open their doors early to allow local children the chance to shop.
Are you interested in volunteering? Volunteers are paired with each child, helping them choose correct sizes, and keeping track of the amount they've spent. Volunteers must be fingerprinted before the event. Appointments are available at the SLO County YMCA on Wednesday, July 14 from 5:00-7:00 PM, and on Thursday, July 15 from 8:30-10:00 AM. Past volunteers do not need to be re-fingerprinted. Email [email protected], or visit www.unitedwayslo.org for more information.

Sponsor a child for just $100. Visit unitedwayslo.org to donate, or mail your donation, earmarked for "KidSpree" to our office.

Junior Achievement Volunteers Needed
In order to help promote financial stability and independence, in 2009 United Way joined forces with Junior Achievement to teach high school students about personal financial basics.  The JA High School Financial Planning Program, developed by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE), covers budgeting, saving, credit, investing, identity theft and insurance in five consecutive weekly sessions.  During each lesson, students learn about key terms and concepts, and apply their new knowledge to a group activity or game.  Volunteer teams teach each session, bringing their own personal knowledge and experience to the classroom while encouraging students to explore the role that money plays in achieving their personal goals.  Throughout the course planning, goal setting and thoughtful decision-making skills are emphasized.

United Way is looking for volunteers to help teach the sessions in San Luis Obispo and Paso Robles.  Ideal candidates will have first-hand knowledge and experience with sound financial practices (a career in banking or the financial industry is especially applicable), be comfortable presenting to high school seniors, and will be available for a one hour orientation and five hour-long classes.  Contact Rachel Cementina at (805) 541-1234 or [email protected]for more information or to volunteer.
