KidSpree
| Our annual children's shopping event has returned, with a new name and a new sponsor! We are proud to announce a brand new partnership between United Way of SLO County, Northern Santa Barbara County United Way and Kohl's to welcome KidSpree to the Central Coast. The event will provide much needed back-to-school clothing for
local economically-disadvantaged children. The children participating in
the
shopping spree will choose new school clothes, receive school supplies,
and
enjoy a morning breakfast.
On Sunday, July 25, 2010, the Kohl's stores in Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Maria will all open their doors early to allow local children the chance to shop. Are you interested in volunteering? Volunteers are paired with each child, helping them choose correct sizes, and keeping track of the amount they've spent. Visit VolunteerSLO.org to sign up. Volunteers must be fingerprinted at least two weeks prior to the event.
Sponsor a child for just $100. Visit unitedwayslo.org to donate, or mail your donation, earmarked for "KidSpree" to our office.

Not So "Basic" Clothing
|

Two ambitious Cal Poly students, Ryan Bylard and David Liebig, co-founders of Basic Clothing, recently came to United Way with an idea. They had begun designing shirts, and after selling out of their first production, wanted to give back to the community through the project. They decided to donate the proceeds of the next production to a local organization. With the help of Left Coast T-Shirt Company, they produced 100 shirts, and sold them for $5 each. Ryan and David brought their donation to United Way, and directed it to serve local homeless shelters.

Together We Can Advance the Common Good
|
United Way understands that you want to make a difference
right here in San Luis Obispo County-and we want to help! Partner with a nationally
known and trusted charity to meet your company's social responsibility and philanthropic
objectives. We are advancing the common good by helping to provide the building
blocks for a good life- education, income, and health. We help to meet critical
needs and invest in long-term initiatives that create real, lasting change. To
achieve these goals, we bring people together from across the
county- non-profits, local government, school districts, and organizations like
yours, for programs and events, such as KidSpree. This month, you and your employees or coworkers have the opportunity to volunteer or donate to make a difference in a child's life. Pull together a team of volunteers from your company, or set a sponsorship goal, every $100 sends an additional child to KidSpree with a $100 gift card.
If it requires helping people and working together, that's what we do.

United Way Awards $100,000 to Local Health and Human Service Programs
|
Wrapping up the 2010-2011 Community Impact Fund grant process,
United Way recently awarded $100,000 to 20 different health and human service
programs throughout SLO County. Collectively, these programs will touch
thousands of lives of our friends, family members and neighbors. Our most
sincere thanks to all the hardworking volunteers who helped make these grants a
reality by reviewing applications, financial statements, and making funding
recommendations!
A complete list of Community Impact Fund grant recipients can be
found on our website at www.unitedwayslo.org. Congratulations to all grant and award recipients!

Innovation Award 2010
|
The annual
Innovation Award recognizes a local not-for-profit organization for inventive
approaches and a program that provides value to the SLO County community in one
or more of our three areas of focus - education, income and health.
The program exhibits lasting change, practical collaboration and internal
transformation as key characteristics through its service delivery. The
2010 Innovation Award recipient is the Liberty Tattoo and Removal Program, a
service provided by Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo
County. This program is the only one of its kind in SLO County, and
removes anti-social, gang, prison, or substance abuse related tattoos that
prevent individuals from obtaining employment or advancing in their job.
Tattoo removal also helps in adults becoming better role models for their
children, making significant lifestyle changes and ultimately, becoming
healthier members of the community. In order to receive services,
participants must volunteer 16 hours of community service to a local nonprofit.
The program is an example of effective collaboration - the County of San
Luis Obispo provides the laser machine, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center
provides space and supplies for treatments and local dermatologists volunteer
their time. This year's $5,000 cash award was sponsored by Don Maruska
& Company, Inc., IQMS and Chevron.

The Community Center at Cal Poly

| The Community Center at Cal Poly has supported United Way in big ways throughout 2009-2010. We would like to extend our thanks for their dedication to Make a Difference Day, connecting us with Muir Hall (our on campus residence partner), and honoring the Youth Board with the President's Service Award, as well as their upcoming support of this summer's KidSpree.

ACTION Survey
|
Starting on Tuesday May 25, San Luis Obispo
County residents will have the opportunity to give their opinions about their
quality of life. During late May and early June, over 1,100 county
residents will be surveyed by telephone for their perspectives on basic needs,
the economy, education, health, public safety, the social environment and the
natural environment. The telephone survey data will be combined with
other county data to create San Luis Obispo's County's report card known as the
ACTION for Healthy Communities Comprehensive Report. The project is being led
by the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation and conducted by Applied
Survey Research (ASR), a non-profit social research firm." To
view previous ACTION reports, visit unitedwayslo.org/action.
