New Support Keeps 2-1-1 Running
The county's 211 phone line for health and social services and other crisis situations will continue operating - at least for the first six months of 2010. United Way of San Luis Obispo County is contracting with Interface Children Family Services of Ventura County to provide 211 support after 211 SLO Hotline announced it would close at the end of the year because of a lack of adequate funding. United Way is taking over the authority for the 211 phone service with the Public Utilities Commission, which issued the permit for 211 two years ago. Interface will partner with Transitions-Mental Health Association to forward suicide prevention and crisis related calls. United Way's board approved $20,000 in emergency reserve funding, which was matched by $20,000 from Pacific Gas and Electric Co. to keep 211 operational for another six months. United Way still seeks community support for the long term success of 211.

Share A Tree
Target and United Way partnered once again to bring Share A Tree to the Central Coast. This year, two families recieved 7' fully decorated holiday trees from Target in Paso Robles, and gifts donated by the generous employees at Old Navy and Bath & Body Works in San Luis Obispo. Volunteers Harmony (pictured) and Felix from Charter Communications, helped us deliver the trees and gifts.

Born Learning Comes to Oceano Elementary
United Way's first bilingual Born Learning Trail has been unveiled at Oceano Elementary School. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on December 17th. The Oceano Elementary School Student Council and First 5 SLO County preschool students were joined by District 4 Supervisor Katcho Achadjian, First 5 Chair; Susan Hughes, First 5 Executive Director; John Lindsey, PG&E; and Ron Walton, Oceano Elementary School Principal.
The 10 signs surrounding the school, now in both English and Spanish, encourage parents and caregivers to make every moment a learning moment. Learn more about Born Learning on our website. |
