Make A Difference Day 2009

On Saturday, October 24th, over 450 community members participated in the 11th annual Make A Difference Day! Each volunteer spent four hours at one of 30 county-wide locations, from Nipomo up to Paso Robles. Projects ranged from cleaning and gardening to car washes and walk-a-thons. Make A Difference Day is a nationally recognized day of service, organized locally by the Community Center at Cal Poly and United Way. Thank you to all of our sponsors and participants! Karen Baker, the first-in-the-nation state cabinet Secretary of Service and Volunteering, made her first visit to SLO County to speak to nonprofit staff, volunteers and community members after the 2009 Collboartion Forum. Born Learning Coming to Oceano Elementary

A Born Learning Trail will soon be placed around Oceano Elementary School. These 10 signs, now in both English and Spanish, encourage parents and caregivers to make every moment a learning moment. 2009-2010 State Campaign The 2009-2010 California State Employees Charitable Campaign (CSECC) that began on September 1st is now over. United Way would like to thank all the agency campaign coordinators that helped process the pledge forms. We would like to also thank all the continuing and new donors. We will pass along more detailed results next month.
Thank you Cal Poly Corporation Employees of Cal Poly Corporation pledged $6,436. That is a 5% increase over last year. For the past 65 years Cal Poly Corporation was known as the California Polytechnic State University Foundation, often called the Cal Poly Foundation. In 2006, they changed their name to the Cal Poly Corporation. The Cal Poly Corporation includes employees of the El Corral Bookstore, Campus Dining, and University Graphics Systems. United Way thanks all the Corporation employees that donated to this year's campaign.
Campaign eNewsletter United Way of San Luis Obispo County will be launching a brand new Workplace Campaign eNewsletter. Our target audience will be current Employee Campaign Coordinators and potential campaign coordinators. The newsletter will feature articles on How To Run A Successful Campaign, FUNdraising Ideas and Volunteer Opportunities. We will also feature a workplace campaign each month. Youth Board Grants |
The deadline to apply for a Youth Board grant is less than two months away! Three $1,000 grants are available to youth driven projects. Inividuals and groups are invited to apply at www.unitedwayslo.org. |

NFL and United Way Halftime Show
NFL fans will be dancing in their seats at home and at Ford Field in Detroit during the 2009 United Way Thanksgiving Day Halftime show: A Motown 50th Anniversary Tribute. The Motown tribute will take place during halftime of the first game of the NFL's Thanksgiving tripleheader when the Detroit Lions host the Green Bay Packers on Thursday, November 26 at 12:30 PM ET on FOX.
This special halftime event features six of the brightest talents from the current roster of Universal Motown Records performing classics from Motown's All-American songbook: Melanie Fiona, Kem, Shontelle, Forvever the Sickest Kids, Vita Chambers, and Hal Linton.
Following the halftime performance, fans can visit NFL.COM/THANKSGIVING to find out how to download a copy of the halftime medley as well as music from each of the artists. Proceeds will benefit United Way. |
