Thanks to all of our volunteers who submitted poems for our CTK Foundation grant application! Here are a couple of our favorites:
Live United - Be excited By the possibilities of helping your communities Care for each other - Extend your hand America is stronger when your neighbor can stand beside you We belong to a community Of people we think see differently But our hopes and dreams are much the same - That our children will know a better life By Kim Murray, City of San Luis Obispo

United Way Welcomes Horace Morana
|
We are pleased to announce that Mr. Horace Morana has joined United Way of SLO County's team as its new Resource Development Coordinator. After graduating from Cal Poly, Horace moved to San Jose, CA to begin a 30 year career in Sales and Marketing. While working for Tektronix, Horace sold test equipment in the heart of Silicon Valley to such "start ups" as Apple Computers, Sun Microsystems and Cisco Systems. In May 2000 Horace and his family moved back to San Luis Obispo to work for Ziatech Corporation. In 2007 Horace became a grant reader for United Way and most recently served on United Way's Community Impact committee. He is very excited about his new position with us and looks forward to using his sales and marketing skills to plan, organize and promote local workplace giving campaigns. Horace has been married to Kristi (also a Cal Poly graduate) for 24 years. They have two boys. Eric, 22, attends Fresno State and is a Communications Major. Peter, 17, will be a senior at San Luis Obispo High School. You can reach Horace at hmorana@unitedwayslo.org. |
Gearing Up for CSECC!
|
The California State Employees Charitable Campaign (CSECC) is just around the corner. This year the campaign chair will be Ms. Karen Baker. Governor Schwarzenegger appointed Karen Baker to serve as the first-in-the-nation state cabinet Secretary of Service and Volunteering. The CSECC is the only statutorily authorized workplace campaign for employees of the State of California and was established in 1957 to provide a single, convenient charitable fundraising drive in the State community. United Way of San Luis Obispo County will again facilitate this year's campaign. United Way works closely with volunteer campaign coordinators at every state location in the county including Cal Poly, the California Men's Colony, Atascadero State Hospital, the Department of Motor Vehicles, Cal Trans and several others. The coordinators help distribute pledge forms and donor resource guides to every employee, coordinate informational sessions, and motivate their peers to consider or continue their participation. They act as the liaison between employees and United Way, who then collects the completed pledge forms from each agency and returns them to Sacramento for processing. The success of the state campaign depends greatly on these workplace campaign coordinators and their support is greatly appreciated. If you are your agency or department's state campaign coordinator and have not yet been contacted, please e-mail Horace Morana at hmorana@unitedwayslo.org or call (805) 541-1234.

Thank You IQMS!
|
Our fiscal 2009/2010 campaign season is off to a great start with IQMS employees pledging $7,050. That pledge was matched by the company for a total campaign of $14,100. IQMS, headquartered in Paso Robles, is a pioneer in the design and development of enterprise recourse planning (ERP) software for the manufacturing industry. They have over 100 employees with 50 based in San Luis Obispo County. IQMS believes in giving back to the surrounding community. Earlier this year IQMS was one of the sponsors for United Way's Innovation Award. The award recognized a local not-for-profit organization for inventive approaches and programs that provide value to the SLO County community in the areas of education, income and health. The Innovation Award and this year's campaign are excellent examples of employee giving and corporate support. We would like to thank Randy Flamm, President, Nancy Flamm, Vice President and Liz Alflen, HR/Administrative Manager for their assistance with this year's campaign. |

1. I'm a vegetarian so I don't need to worry about catching swine flu.
Myth: Consuming pork does not spread the H1N1 virus. Like seasonal flu, swine flu is spread person to person via respiratory droplets to mucous membranes (eyes, nose and mouth).
2. I'm sneezing and coughing so I must have swine flu.
Myth: Coughing and sneezing alone are not generally associated with the swine flu. Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of other flu strains including: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue, diarrhea, and vomiting.
3. You can spread swine flu to others even if you feel great.
Fact: If you do have swine flu, you can give it to others about 24 hours before you develop symptoms.
4. I get the flu shot, so I don't need the swine flu vaccine too.
Myth: The regular flu shot does not offer protection from H1N1.
5. Hand sanitizers don't kill the new H1N1 virus.
Myth: Hand sanitizers have been shown to be effective at killing the swine flu virus. When soap and water are not available, using hand sanitizers will help prevent the spread of the virus.
Health officials suggest basic hygiene measures to prevent the spread of H1N1. Everyday actions can be taken to stay healthy:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Alcohol based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Stay home and limit contact with others if you get sick.
- Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures. |
