New EFSP Funds Available
San Luis Obispo County has been awarded federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) for the Emergency Food and Shelter national Board Program.

We have been chosen to receive $86,000 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county. A local board will determine how the funds awarded to SLO County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter program services run by local agencies in the area.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for ARRA EFSP funds should download an application online at www.unitedwayslo.org or contact United Way of San Luis Obispo County. The deadline for applications to be received is 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19, 2009.

DifferenceBorn Learning Comes to the Birth & Baby Fair
Birth and Baby Fair
United Way joined in all the festivities at this year's Birth & Baby Fair on May 9, hosted by the Birth and Baby Resource Network of SLO County.  This fun, educational event brought together businesses, organizations and individuals that are dedicated to serving families and children. Along with health and parenting resources, the fair included products and services relating to pregnancy, birth and early parenting, kids activities, a wonderful silent auction and entertainment.  United Way featured Born Learning materials and its Born Learning Trail, one of which is established in the children's play section of Mitchell Park in downtown SLO.  For more information on the Born Learning program or to download materials, visit our website.

EFSPCampaign Spotlight: Thank you SLO County Employees!

This month our Resource Development team helped re-launch another successful San Luis Obispo County Workplace Giving Campaign. The County employees have consistently given generously to their campaign for several years - last year they pledged close to $50,000! Thank you!

County of SLOWorkplace donations, from thousands of your colleagues and neighbors help United Way leverage additional funding from outside San Luis Obispo County. Just think what an individual donation, multiplied by hundreds or thousands, can do for our neighbors in need. The United Way staff and its volunteers are working diligently alongside business owners to identify ways to promote their company's generosity.  If you are a business owner or know of a business that would like to learn more about a Workplace Giving Campaign please contact Tara Contino or Horace Morana at 541-1234.

We are also looking for individual contributors that want to start their own "Giving Campaign".  They can make a pledge via our secure website or download a pledge form by visiting www.unitedwayslo.org/donatenow.htm. Together, UNITED, we can inspire hope and create opportunities for a better tomorrow.
