NewStaffNew Year Challenge!

With the beginning of each New Year comes reflection, anticipation, and well-intentioned resolutions that, as one wise man said, "go in one year and out the other."  However, we propose that this year be different.  Intentionally or not, every day you change the world around you; whether you use that power for the betterment or detriment of others up to you.
Instead of the usual inward-focused resolutions - exercise, weight loss, getting organized - that never seem to stick, why not give your efforts an outward focus?  This year United Way challenges you to develop world-changing habits that will last a lifetime by incorporating the following into your life:
GIVE: Contribute $2-20 of each paycheck to support worthy causes around you.
ADVOCATE:  Every week encourage at least one person to join you in your efforts.
VOLUNTEER:  Sacrifice at least one hour of your time each week by volunteering at an organization you feel passionate about; you'll be surprised how good that "sacrifice" will feel! (For local volunteer opportunities visit Volunteer SLO or view our "Wish List".

National Days of Service!     January 17th - 19th

During the 1950s and '60s, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. recognized the power of service to strengthen communities and achieve common goals.  Initiated by Congress in 1994, King Day of Service builds on that that legacy by transforming the federal holiday honoring Dr. King into a national day of community service grounded in his teachings of nonviolence and social justice. The aim is to make the holiday a day "on" instead of "off", where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the "Beloved Community" that Dr. King envisioned. With thousands of projects planned across the country, the 2009 King Day of Service on January 19 promises to be the biggest and best ever.

President-elect Barack Obama is calling on citizens and volunteers across the country to plan, organize and stage nonpartisan, volunteer community service events in their neighborhoods for the weekend of Saturday, January 17th through Monday, January 19th to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Central Coast United for Change will be coordinating a food drive throughout San Luis Obispo and Northern Santa Barbara Counties. Volunteers in SLO County will be collecting food and delivering it to the local Food Bank Coalition for distribution.  To volunteer email your name, contact information and city you can volunteer in: ccuc@centralcoastunitedforchange.org.

      ContributorLoyal Contributor Lives United
The United Way Loyal Contributor Program recognizes and celebrates individuals who have supported United Way for many years and, in so doing, have had an impact on the lives of many people in our community.   We'd like to highlight one of these dedicated contributors and thank them for their continuing support.

Frank Fertschneider of San Luis Obispo
30+ years of giving to United Way

"I am old enough to remember something President Franklin Delano Roosevelt said:  'The measure of a society is not that it provides more to those who have plenty but provides for those who have too little.'  For years my wife Margaret and I have been able to serve a variety of needs through numerous organizations.  The United Way is so important because it looks at all the health and human service needs in the county.  Providing groceries to a hungry family is just a Band Aid.  That family also needs adequate housing, health and childcare.  That's why it's so important for everyone to come together and help."

Advancing the Common Good:  United Way Policy Agenda for the 111th Congress

United Way of America (UWA), the national organization dedicated to leading the United Way movement, recently released the United Way Policy Agenda for the 111th Congress.  United Way engages in public policy advocacy because we recognize that it is our civic obligation to use our experience and knowledge to help inform policy-makers' decisions regarding policy and funding of government human services programs. This document will help fulfill our obligation to assist policymakers in crafting the best possible governmental policies in the areas of Education, Income and Health.

UWA's policy agenda is organized by the work of United Ways across the country in the areas of
2-1-1, education, income and health.  Additionally, UWA advocates for sound policies affecting the nonprofit sector's capacity to advance the common good.  Within each of these five categories, based on United Way's 10-year goals (see below), UWA has established its priorities for the 111th Congress, which include (but are not limited to):
