Free Prescription Drug Discount Cards For the Uninsured
Are you, your employees, or your clients uninsured? Businesses and nonprofits alike can benefit from a new program with United Way of SLO County. United Way is partnering with FamilyWize to bring you prescription drug discount cards which could save you 35% on medicine. Most pharmacies on the Central Coast have agreed to provide lower pricing to everyone that brings in a FamilyWize prescription drug discount card.
This card is accepted at most pharmacies nationwide, covers all prescription drugs, everyone with no health insurance or prescription coverage, and all medicine not covered by insurance, Medicaid, Medicare or other benefit plans. All cards are bilingual, and there are no age, income or residency restrictions, so anyone can use it. There is no registration or enrollment. For more information or to receive a card, contact Rachel Cementina.

Born Learning Trail
Born Learning Trail DedicationUnited Way, in partnership with First 5 SLO County and Bank of America, dedicated a Born Learning Trail in Mitchell Park in San Luis Obispo. This trail is designed to engage children, turning everyday outings into fun learning moments. The presentation to the community on August 2 began with dedications by Carl Dudley, United Way of SLO County Board President, County Supervisors Katcho Achadjian and Jim Patterson, and Charmaine Beth of Bank of America. An afternoon of festivities was enjoyed by over 100 family members that took part in face painting, art with the SLO Children's Museum, balloon animals with Dr. Nick the Balloonatic, refreshing snacks from Giordano's Fruit Freeze, a visit from the SLO Fire Department and music with Ivan Ulz and John Messer in the Rotary Bandstand. View photos of the event on our website. Also, be listening for new Born Learning Public Service Announcements on the radio.

Rent a Room to Someone in Need
Many disabled persons need subsidized housing. Persons on permanent disability benefits from SSI only receive $871/month, and cannot pay market rent. If you own an apartment or house and want to rent it out under Section 8, you could do a public service, get tenants easily and possibly charge higher rent, since you would get a rental subsidy. If you have an extra room in your house, you could rent it out for $300/month, about 1/3 of SSI disability.
It is easier than you may think to rent out your home. Tenants may be screened, or asked for references, and renting rooms under Residential Care Home provisions does not require a special license, zoning, or permits. Some prospective tenants are disabled and some are just low income workers or seniors.
There are over 1500 households on a waiting list to get Section 8 housing. If you want to rent a room in your house to one or more disabled persons contact Pearl Munak of Transitional Food and Shelter, Inc. Call her at 238-7056 or email her at pearltrans@aol.com.

Olympic Trivia
Olympic Rings
Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympic Games, explains the meaning of the flag: "The Olympic flag has a white background, with five interlaced rings in the centre: blue, yellow, black, green and red. This design is symbolic; it represents the five continents of the world, united by Olympism, while the six colours are those that appear on all the national flags of the world at the present time."
