United Way of SLO County and Mervyns Present
July 19, 2008
We still need volunteers and sponsors for this year's ChildSpree! For every $100, an underserved child gets to shop for new school clothes and supplies. Volunteers will shop with the children, help them pick out their clothes so they can get what they truly want, and help keep track of what they have spent.
Thanks to the SLO County YMCA for providing fingerprinting!
Kudos to Susan Polk and the entire staff at Susan Polk Insurance Angency of San Luis Obispo for participating in ChildSpree, as well as running a workplace campaign. She even sponsored a child!
All volunteers must be fingerprinted before the event. The last date for fingerprinting is June 26th. Pictured here is Nate Asher, from the SLO County YMCA, fingerprinting Susan. Check in begins at 6:00 a.m. and shopping is from 7:00-9:00 a.m. Email childspree@unitedwayslo.org for more information. |

The Candidates on Philanthropy: |
The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently profiled the contenders for the White House and their thoughts about the issues that affect nonprofit groups. Here is a selection of their views: Sen. John McCain, Republican of Arizona Education: Believes all federal financial support should be predicated on giving parents the ability to move their children, and the dollars associated with them, from failing schools to ones that meet higher standards. Source: McCain campaign here and here Health: Would promote federal research into autism, promote early screening, and identify better treatment options for the disorder. Co-sponsored the Combating Autism Act of 2006. Source: McCain campaign National Service: Joined 42 members of the Senate who wrote a letter in 2003 asking President Bush to request additional money for AmeriCorps following a fiscal crisis that forced the program to slash its budget. Source: Letter from 43 senators to the president on July 17, 2003 Nonprofit Groups: Has said "it is essential that I as president do everything I can to expand the nonprofit sector." Would work to allow people who do not itemize tax deductions to deduct charitable gifts, to help nonprofit groups compete for government contracts, and to highlight the work that nonprofit groups do - for example, through White House conferences. Source: Response to Nonprofit Primary Project question. Sen. Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois Education: Would provide $10-billion a year to create Early Learning Challenge Grants to stimulate state projects; quadruple the number of eligible children for Early Head Start and increase Head Start funds; create a Presidential Early Learning Council to increase federal, state, and local collaboration. Source: Obama campaign Housing: Would create an Affordable Housing Trust Fund to develop low-cost housing in mixed-income neighborhoods. It would use a small percentage of the profits of two government-sponsored housing agencies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, to create new housing units. Source: Leadership Council of Aging Organizations presidential candidates survey Nonprofit Groups: Has pledged to create a Social Investment Fund Network, which would distribute government and private money to charities working on innovative projects that focus on issues that have been identified by cities as priorities - crime prevention or education, for example - and help expand successful ones to other regions. California State Employees Charitable Campaign Increases by Almost $21,000!
|
State employees dug deep this year and topped their previous year's campaign in San Luis Obispo County for a grand total of almost $188,000 in pledges to nonprofit agencies of each donor's choice. We attribute this to the hard work the state agency campaign coordinators did onsite to attend trainings, coordinate the distribution and collection of pledge forms, and their encouragement to each department to participate in the campaign. A special gift will be coming to all Leadership Level donors who contributed $500 or more through payroll deduction and we applaud the generosity of all donors for their participation. We would also like to thank Penny Phaklides, Litigation Coordinator for Atascadero State Hospital, for acting as this year's Loaned Executive for our county. Ms. Phaklides worked closely with our campaign coordinator, Kathleen Richen, to coordinate the efforts of this year's campaign among the over 8,000 state employees in our region. This year, United Way has a new campaign coordinator, Lilith Chenaux, who will be embarking soon on CSECC 2008! |
AmeriCorps Week |
The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors proclaimed May 11-18, 2008 AmeriCorps Week. Our Central Coast Volunteer Corps has 30+ members serving at over 25 agencies throughout the county, including one right here at United Way of SLO County. As part of the week, the AmeriCorps members served at a stand-down for local veterans, where they distributed sleeping bags, clothing, and other items to those in need. United Way commends those who dedicate their time to serving nonprofits and improving the community.
