What is LIVE UNITED?
|
The brand new look of our eNewsletter corresponds with the launch of the new Live United campaign: Underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do, we are all people. Connected, interdependent, united. And when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. That's what it means to LIVE UNITED. |
Thank You! |

Scott, Aaron, Derek and Gary of Meathead Movers, Inc. |
We'd like to send warm thanks to a couple of very generous business owners in San Luis Obispo - Ms. Annie Shanks and Mr. Aaron Steed. Ms. Shanks, of Annie Shanks Insurance & Financial Services, donated an oak desk to our office and Mr. Steed provided the top notch services of Meathead Movers, Inc., sending a friendly, energetic team to transport the desk to its new home. Nonprofits appreciate this kind of support which allows their staff and volunteers to work in a better, more efficient environment while saving the organization time and money to focus on their work and clients in need. Please join us in giving these two businesses a round of applause for their giving spirit!

Community Impact Fund Update
|
This year United Way received 57 grant applications from 42 agencies, within 3 funding initiatives: Education, Financial Stability and Health. While over $420,000 was requested, we are only able to award approximately $170,000 in grants-this is the difficult reality our volunteer grant readers face as they begin to review the applications. Grant readers come from all over the county, and bring a wide variety of skills and knowledge to the process. Once all the grants have been reviewed, each initiative panel will make their recommendations to the Community Impact Committee, who will make a final funding recommendation to the United Way Board of Directors. Awards are announced on or about June 1; check the United Way website for additional details and updates!

Volunteer with Youth and United Way |
The United Way of San Luis Obispo County Youth Board consists of high school students (ages 13-19) who form a mini board of directors and learn about the community, express their views on youth issues, and award grants to local youth serving organizations. We are currently seeking adult and student volunteers to be part of the development committee, as well as nominations for student board members for participation in the Fall. Interested? Contact Rachel Cementina via email or at 541-1234 x 30.

Finding Time to Volunteer
|
We each have 8,760 hours in a year, roughly 720 hours in a month, 168 hours in a week, 24 hours in a day. How many can you spare to make someone's day? It's not as hard as you think. With a little advance planning, you can work volunteering into an already busy schedule.
1. Combine family time with volunteering. Volunteering is a great way to spend quality time with the family while passing your values to your children. 2. Many companies give their employees time to volunteer during the workday. Ask about policies at your job. 3. Make a specific volunteer opportunity a weekly, monthly, or even yearly tradition so it is just as important as a birthday or holiday. 4. Join a social group that emphasizes volunteering. You'll meet new people, network and give back to the community all at the same time. 5. Make a list of volunteer activities that do not require a commitment and keep them handy. When you have a little free time, you can spontaneously decide to participate.

News Flash for April 2008
|
A new cell phone law will be effective July 1, 2008: "All drivers are prohibited from using a handheld wireless telephone while operating a motor vehicle. Motorists 18 and over may use a hands-free device. Drivers under the age of 18 may NOT use a wireless telephone or hands-free device while operating a motor vehicle."
What does that mean for you?
- The new law does not prohibit dialing, but drivers are strongly urged not to dial while driving. It is legal to use a Blue Tooth or other earpiece; however you cannot have BOTH ears covered.
- Drivers under the age of 18 may not use a wireless telephone to speak or text while driving, even hands free. Parents cannot give permission to allow use of a wireless telephone while driving.
- The only exception is an emergency situation that requires you to call a law enforcement agency, a health care provider, the fire department or other emergency agency entity.
