March is National Nutrition Month
In its honor, here are the top ten nutrition facts, as suggested by the American Diabetic Association.
1. Eating right doesn't have to be complicated. Use Mypyramid.gov to develop a personalized plan for lifelong health.
2. The best nutrition advice is based on science. Before adopting any changes to your diet, be sure the information is based in scientific fact.
3. Get your food and nutrition facts from the expert: a registered dietitian. RDs are uniquely qualified to translate the science of nutrition into reliable advice you can use every day.
4. Balancing physical activity and a healthful diet is your best recipe for managing weight and promoting overall health and fitness.
5. Think nutrient-rich rather than "good" or "bad" foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients - and lower in calories.
6. Look at the big picture: No single food or meal makes or breaks a healthful diet. Your total diet is the most important focus for healthful eating.
7. Prepare, handle and store food properly to keep you and your family safe from food-borne illness.
8. Don't fall prey to food myths and misinformation that may harm rather than benefit your health.
9. Read food labels to get nutrition facts that help you make smart food choices quickly and easily.
10. Find the healthy fats when making food choices. By choosing polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats, you can keep your saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol low.

Emergency Food and Shelter Program Funding Available Federal funding is now available to support San Luis Obispo County's Emergency Food and Shelter Programs. SLO County has been chosen to receive $123,654 of EFSP Phase 26 funding.
The allocation of this federal funding is based on each county's current unemployment rates and poverty statistics from the 2000 Census. A local EFSP Board is responsible for distributing funds through a competitive application process. SLO County's Board is made up of representatives from United Way, American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, the Economic Opportunity Commission, Jewish Federation, the Ministerial Association, the Salvation Army, 2-1-1/Hotline, a homeless representative, and other community members.
Qualifying agencies are urged to apply. Agencies chosen by the Board to receive funds must:
1) Be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government
2) Have an accounting system
3) Practice nondiscrimination
4) Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs
5) Have a voluntary board if they are a private voluntary organization
The funding period is November 1, 2007 through November 30, 2008. Funds will be available to recipient agencies approximately the end of May 2008. Funding may be used to cover all eligible expenses incurred during the funding period; agencies may be reimbursed for eligible expenses that were incurred prior to receipt of funding.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds may contact Lilith Chenaux at United Way of SLO County, (805) 541-1234 ext. 10 or visit www.unitedwayslo.org to download an application.
To download a Phase 26 EFSP manual, visit: www.efsp.unitedway.org/EFSP/pdffolder/manual.pdf
Applications must be received at the United Way in San Luis Obispo by 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 26. Email applications will not be accepted, nor will applications received after the deadline regardless of postmark. |
The Community Impact Fund: At Work in Your Community
Through the Community Impact Fund, United Way is able to award grants to local nonprofit organizations to help support various health and human service programs. In 2007, we awarded more than $175,000 to 25 programs, serving clients throughout SLO County. Here's how your donation dollars are making a difference:
· Since July 2007, the Community Counseling Center has added 9 additional volunteer therapists to their low-income counseling program; they now have a total of 43 professional volunteers who see clients in 9 cities in the county. These therapists have donated over 2,000 clinical hours, cumulatively worth over $200,000.
· Grant funds awarded to Community Health Centers of the Central Coast were used to purchase a new ultrasound machine. Women who are waiting for MediCal eligibility and cannot get an ultrasound at a hospital can now be seen by CHC, helping to detect potential problems and ensure the health of the baby and mother.
· VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) has a new chapter in SLO County that helps foster more effective service to people affected by disaster. A grant from the Community Impact Fund helped start this program, which will minimize duplication of efforts and more efficiently manage activities during local disasters.
· Operation School Bell, a program of the Assistance League of San Luis Obispo County, has provided new school clothes, jackets, backpacks and books to over 900 local underserved children in kindergarten through sixth grade, since July 2007.
· Children of low-income families living at Canyon Creek Apartments in Paso Robles can enroll in Peoples' Self-Help Housing's Education Enhancement Program, where they receive homework help, improve their literacy skills and participate in enrichment activities, such as physical education, science and nutrition. Over 50 elementary-aged children currently attend on a daily basis.
Thank you for your continued support of these important programs! |
