A Note From Steve McShane Greetings, Gardeners!!!
Fall is quickly approaching and with it some major changes in our landscapes. Plants know available daylight is changing and as a result, they are beginning to shift their energy into storing food and hunkering down for the coming cool months. As such, root growth in our plants increases several fold. Now is the perfect time to apply fertilizer. Fall feeding has been proven to be almost as important as spring. For this reason, I recommend a fantastic organic slow release product called "Dynamite." A little amount goes a long way. We've put it on sale and I'd recommend it applied across all your favorites.
Now is also an important time to consider groundcover and weed control for your garden. We have a multitude of barks and gravels for you to choose from and our experts are waiting to help you calculate just how much you need and even deliver it to your doorstep! Did I mention we can spread bark as well as deliver it? Just inquire with our dispatch office.
I absolutely love living on the Central Coast of California. This fall I invite you to discover the wonder of what sort of color, edible landscaping, or outdoor living you can add to your home. Time spent in the yard is time well spent.
Sincerely,
Steve McShane

Be Ware of Invasive Plants
Planting ornamental grasses are great for adding motion and contrast to your landscape. There are a variety to chose from that are wonderful to use. However, some should be avoided here in the central coast to protect our wild areas. Many of these plant forms are vigorous growers and have become invasive.
Wild places like Big Sur are internationally recognized as highly valuable for their beauty and wildness which is compromised when invasives take over and our special places trend toward looking like other locations that are sick with international weeds. This also alters the local ecology.
Some plant cultivars are invasive while others are sterile and considered non invasive. Please check with your local nursery to be sure which plants are best for our area.

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of "Bald Cypress, Taxodium disticum, which is also deciduous; losing its leaves in the winter months, hence the name "bald"" to last month's question of: What species of trees has adapted its roots to have "knees"?
This month's question is: When were the first garden hoses made? And of what material?
The rules of the game are simple.
We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter. The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.
Have fun and good luck!
