A Note From Steve McShane
Fall is coming !!!

We've just passed the "dog days" of summer and fall is quickly coming.  Believe me when I say the plants know it.  During August a landscapers duties are still as busy as ever.

For the garden I recommend a good dose of organic fertilizer.  Not only will it count as your fall "feeding," but it will help to usher in one more bloom set on flowering plants like roses.  More important, it will help with your veggies.  A large number of tomato growers will benefit from some fertilizer right about now.  In order to guarantee a better fall fruit set, I recommend that tomato growers start stressing their plants by pulling back on the water.

When it comes to your hardscape, August and September are great times to take advantage of low prices on bulk landscape materials.  By putting bark or rock in place now, you will not have to face the weeds that will be here in another sixty days.

I want to share my ongoing excitement for the two new partner organizations we've brought on board out here at McShane's.  In our greenhouse, we now have JLJ Statuary.  JLJ is a wholesale statuary manufacturer out of King City.  They have opened an outlet at McShane's with hundreds of discounted items ranging from pottery to water features, wall decor and garden ornaments.  We are also very proud to announce "Fresh From D'Vine Produce."  Fresh from D'Vine has been working tirelessly to outfit a 1200 square foot space for sale of fresh, local and organic fruits and vegetables.  They were given "final" approval by the County of Monterey last Friday.  Their expected date to open is August 25th.  We hope you will plan to come in and check them out.

It is an ongoing pleasure to serve as your source for knowledge, service and quality landscape materials here on Highway 68.  Thank you for shopping small business and keeping your dollars local. We look forward to seeing you soon.

August Gardening Tips
  • Plant ornamental grasses such as Miscanthus, Pennisetum and Hardy Pampas Grass for motion and contrast.
  • Fall Mums are coming in soon - plant them for a colorful autumn.
  • Daffodils and tulips should be fertilized in early to mid-August. Apply 2 pounds of 5-10-10 or 6-12-12 per 100 square feet.
  • It's a great time to add a water feature to your landscape that you will enjoy not only in the summer, but all year round. Creative ponds, fountains and waterfalls are on display at McShane's and we have an educated staff to help plan it.
  • If your lawn is in bad shape due to drought stress, insects, weeds or other reasons and you are considering a total renovation, August is the time to get started. Ask McShane's for advice.

This month's question is:  What species of trees has adapted its roots to have "knees"?

The rules of the game are simple.

We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter.  The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.
