Disappearing Water Feature

A Note From Steve McShane
Summer is here !!!

It is with great excitement that we welcome long days complete with cool / foggy mornings and warm afternoons.  During July we encourage gardeners and landscapers to feed their vegetables and flowers.  I recommend "Bud and Bloom" by Dr. Earth.  I also recommend drizzling a small amount of compost under the drip line of shrubs and trees.  The soil in your garden is more alive during July then any other month of the year.  Feeding your soil with some compost will go a long way.

Summer is a great time along the central coast to consider adding a water feature to your landscape.  Why not consider a small, self-contained disappearing style fountain or something with multiple tiers to encourage visits from birds.  Either way, I'm pleased to remind you that McShane's has a full service pond department.  We'll even come to your home or jobsite to get your water feature ship-shape.

During the summer months we see a small up-tick in requests for landscape design.  Did you know that we are offering a "free consultation" when you agree to utilize McShane's for a landscape plan?  We've got architects, designers and staff standing ready to help rejuvenate your garden.

I remind myself daily how lucky we are to live here along the Central Coast of California.  We are surrounded by beauty and the chance to garden year round.  I welcome you to allow us the chance to help you.

July Gardening Tips

Watering

When is it enough? Whether you are using drip or sprinklers or hand watering, measuring how much water is actually getting down to the plant's roots is important so you don't under or overwater. At your local garden center, there is a tool called a moisture meter that can help determine the proper amount to apply. It sells for less than $20 and has a metal probe and a simple needle dial on top that tells you if the soil is dry, moist or wet. The moist reading is recommended. Great for using in pots or on vegetables. One caution, pull the meter out of the soil using the probe rather than the plastic housing on top as the meter can pull apart.

Winter Vegetables

Late July is the time to start seeding your winter vegetables. They need the heat to germinate and then the long cool, wet winter to slowly grow for harvest in the spring. Quickly growing summer vegetables may also be planted now such as bush beans, radishes, lettuce and peas.

Butterfly Gardens

To attract a variety of butterflies and moths to your garden you need a mixture of spring and summer nectar producing flowers for them to feed on. Butterflies lay their eggs on plants that the newly hatched caterpillars will eat. Here are some of the plants that butterflies and moths like.

  • Herbs: Sage, Hyssop, Thyme, Dill*, Catnip, Lavender, Parsley*, and Common Rue*.
  • Wildflowers: Queen Anne's Lace*, Bee Balm, Goldenrod, Red Clover*, Milkweed*, Purple Coneflower, and Butterfly Weed*
  • Vegetables (let these flower): Cabbage*, Kale*, and Broccoli*
  • Misc. plants: Globe thistle, Yarrow, French Marigolds, Sunset Cosmos, Mexican Sunflowers, Phlox, and Alfalfa*.
  • (*especially good)

Fresh From D'Vine Fruit and Vegetable Stand Coming to McShanes

The buzz is on.  Yup.  Folks all over Salinas and Corral De Tierra are asking about the beautiful addition of a 1200 square foot fresh fruit and vegetable stand here at McShane's.  Its coming !!!  Under the management of Frank and Jenni DeVine, guests can expect local, fresh & organic produce that is chock full of taste.  There are a few final hurdles with County Health before the doors open.  The doors should open third or fourth week in July.
Statuary Outlet is now open at McShane's !!!

Effective July 1st, JLJ Statuary opened a "factory outlet" inside the greenhouse at McShane's Nursery & Landscape Supply.  JLJ has been manufacturing architectural molding, statuary, pottery and fountains out of their King City studio for years.  They have finally decided to start a retail presence through a unique partnership with McShane's.  Be sure to come in and check out their incredible, affordably priced "outdoor-resistant" art and bling for your garden and landscape!
