A Note From Steve McShane After months of waiting, summer is finally here! Summer is a unique time for gardeners here along the central coast. First, for all you "edible landscape" types, it is not too late to plant tomatoes and veggies. Consider heirloom tomato varieties well suited to cooler coastal temperatures. Some of my favorite varieties are Sweet 100, Siberian, Glacier and Stupice. Second, consider succulents for areas of full sun and infrequent watering. Our selection has never been better!
I also remind folks to pepper their veggies and flowers with organic fertilizer. Now is the time to do it. Organic fertilizer is naturally slow release and will provide your garden the kick it needs as things swing into full summer gear. I remind folks to stay on top of weeds or they will stay on top of you as well.
We recently enjoyed a fantastic class on "alternatives to lawn" here at the nursery. The class spoke of the importance to consider barks, rock and even artificial turf for parts of your landscape. It will curb your water bill and keep your yard weed free. I want to remind folks that our classes occur every Saturday and are free to the public.
Did I mention some of the awesome changes taking place out here at McShane's? For starters, we will be welcoming JLJ Statuary and Architectural Art beginning this month. Under the leadership of Lucy Livne, JLJ specializes in a host of statuary, columns and unique "architectural art" for your garden, landscape or home. Their products are being moved into our greenhouse.
I am extremely excited to announce that McShane's will soon be carrying local and organic fresh fruits and vegetables. Next time you are into the store, you will marvel at the fantastic improvements to the 1000 square foot front building parallel to the highway. The area that used to house our pond department and 6th cash register, is now home to "Fresh From D'Vine's" retail produce market. It is expected to open sometime mid to late June, be sure to check it out.
There has not been a more dynamic time for small community based businesses like McShane's. We would not be here if it were not for you, and I want to sincerely thank you for keeping your business local. It matters! I wish you the best this June and look forward to seeing you soon.
- Steve

June Gardening Tips
Fire blight bacteria looks like blackened dead branches and twigs that look torched. It hits ornamentals like pyracantha, cotoneaster, flowering pear and crabapple, mountain ash, hawthorn and fruit trees such as apple, pear, loquat and quince. It overwinters in cankers or wounds and resumes bacterial growth in the spring. There may or may not be oozing from the canker. It is spread by insects, rain, or pruning. The infection can extend into the trunk or root system and may kill the tree. Prune the infected branch about eight inches below the dead area. Spraying during bloom is the preventative method of control. Bring in a sample or talk to our staff if you need help!
Aphids in Plum or Other Fruit Trees Ants in your tree and leaves curled and deformed that look like peach leaf curl are signs that there is an infestation of aphids. McShane's staff can help you choose the product that will get rid of them!
Bearded Iris
They have mostly stopped blooming by now. Young clumps should have their old flower stalks removed so they don't waste energy producing seed. Three or four year old clumps should be divided because they have exhausted the nutrients in the soil and blossom production will decline. The youngest healthiest roots are at the outer edges of the clump. Choose growth with a double fan, 3 - 4 leaves, and a Y shaped root, and plant these.

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of "Dodder" to last month's question of: A gardener notices a weed in the garden that looks like yellow and red threads with no leaves. It appears to attach itself to desired plants and these host plants are rapidly declining. What weed have they found?
This month's question is: What are the 3 major fruits native to North America?
The rules of the game are simple.
We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter. The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.
Have fun and good luck!
