A Note From Steve McShane

Greetings Spring Gardeners !!!

This is my absolute favorite time of the year.  Following a rough and tough winter, flowers are finally ablaze.  Whether it be our landscapes or the beautiful hillsides here along the Central Coast, Mother Nature has awoken.

If you have not started your summer vegetable garden, now is the time. Consider cold-tolerant tomato varieties such as Stupice, Siletz or Japanese Black Trifele.  Peas, squash and corn are also nice additions.  If you have not added mychorhizae to your garden's soil yet, I highly recommend it.  Some studies show three times the root efficieny with it present in the soil.

As blooms and fruiting take place this time of the year, I recommend Dr. Earth "Bud and Bloom" fertilizer.  It is a natural fertilzer that is based on fish meal.  This is the best source of nitrogen found in organic plant food.

For the landscapers out there, I want to suggest that you consider adding some boulders to your garden.  Boulders do not require water and can offer unique color and texture to your outdoor environments.  How to Choose a Boulder Perhaps you can install a small path using flagstone and decomposed granite this spring.  There is a terrific new product called "Technisoil" that will actually stabilize decomposed granite.  It goes a long way.

McShane's remains your one stop shop for landscaping and gardening.  We are open seven days a week and feature helpful workshops every Saturday.  I appreciate your business and wish you and yours a very happy spring.

May Gardening Tips

Mulching:

As summer nears and efficient watering practices become more important, mulching is an effective technique to keep soil temperatures even, to retain moisture in the soil and to prevent weeds from germinating. Mulching with organic matter such as chipped tree trimmings, compost, or barks not only reduces water usage but also improves the organic content and texture of soil. Apply at least two to three inches of material (three to six inches of larger bark pieces), keeping it several inches away from the trunks of trees and shrubs to prevent crown rot. Renew every few years as it decomposes and enriches the soil. McShane's has numerous colors and sizes of mulch to chose from.

Powdery Mildew:

Powdery mildew fungus is a common disease on many plants and produces a white powdery appearance on leaves and sometimes other green parts.  It can be found on roses, dahlias, chrysanthemums, peas and even squash.  McShane's suggests products containing Neem Oil to treat this fungus.  Please ask our staff to help you determine what will work best for your needs.

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of

"In 1893, a case went before the US Supreme Court about importing tomatoes from the West Indies.  Fruits could be imported tax-free, vegetables could not.  Since tomatoes were eaten with main dishes and not desserts, the Court ruled them to be a vegetable, thus taxable" to last month's question of: Why is a tomato legally considered a vegetable?

This month's question is:  A gardener notices a weed in the garden that looks like yellow and red threads with no leaves. It appears to attach itself to desired plants and these host plants are rapidly declining.  What weed have they found?

The rules of the game are simple.

We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter.  The first 10 correct answers each newsletter will be put into a drawing to determine the monthly winner. Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize. Prize must be picked up in person within 2 weeks. Employees are not eligible for this contest.

Have fun and good luck!
