A Note From Steve

Greetings Gardeners & Landscapers !!!!

Winter continues, and with it the opportunity to prepare your outdoor landscape for a spectacular spring!  Three things that come to mind:

1.)  Roses and Fruit Trees:  If you have not considered adding a rose or a fruit tree to your patio or garden, now is the time to do so.  McShane's has been honored on countless occasions for our breadth and depth of selection.  Remember, now is the time to prune, feed and spray your roses and fruit trees!  We can help.

2.)  Mulching:  While it has been drier then normal, we truly need to remember that the odds are, rain is coming.  Consider some of our walk-on-bark.  It is both inexpensive and fantastic to form a protective mat on your soil keeping weeds out of sight.

3.)  Design:  Yep.  Winter is the best time for a landscape design consultation.  We discount our design services in the winter and you will benefit by having a professional plan or advice for your outdoor environment.

I celebrate life daily.  There is no better way to join me in this than by enjoying the beautiful environments around us.  Consider McShane's when it comes to professional advice, outstanding selection, and some of the friendliest staff around.

Thanks for supporting local business.

February Gardening Tips
February is a great time to start thinking about what vegetables you want to plant from seed in your garden! Start planting in late February or early March to be ready to move to your garden in May.

Now is a great time to perform extensive pruning on your fuchsias. Also, dormant spray can be applied now for added insurance of a healthy plant, come spring. You may remove all the leaves now, if you haven't already done so. McShane's has fuchsias in stock, as well as Bonsai fuchsia specimens, and fuchsia trees.

February is also the time to prune hydrangeas. Remove old brittle canes on hydrangeas. Leave young canes with flower buds attached. Hydrangeas bloom on the new year's growth.

Notes from Our Departments

Nursery Department:

Fruit Trees!  Fruit Trees!  Fruit Trees!
McShane's fruit trees have arrived and are potted up in our signature high performance soil blend with an 18 month "RTI Leapstart" Fertilizer Packet.  Selection is at its greatest and NOW is the time to plant.  Prices start as low as $29.99 each.  See our complete list of fruit trees at the link listed in "Links."  How to Buy a Fruit Tree

McShane's also has "multi-grafted" fruit trees.  These trees are great for having a variety of fruit in a small space! They offer the advantages of longer, more varied and more manageable harvests in the space of one tree. Prune your tree to keep one graft from dominating or allow your favorite fruit to rule! Come out and see our selection of "multi-grafted" fruit trees.

We have a HUGE selection of roses!  Like our fruit trees, each rose has been hand planted in our signature high performance soil blend with an 18 month "RTI Leapstart" Fertilizer Packet.  McShane's has over one hundred different types of roses for 2012!  Surely, one to fit your gardening landscape...  How to Buy a Rose Bush

Winter Annuals are here and looking amazing!  Nothing helps us get excited for Spring like fresh color in your yard and garden.
McShane's has pansies, violas, primrose, Iceland poppies, stock and snapdragons on hand to add color and interest to your home.

Check out McShane's camelias.  We have a large selection, and their beauty is amazing. Many are in bloom now!

Come talk to our staff, or take a walk in our yard, to see the many different barks and rocks that we have in stock.  Bark and rock vary, from small to large, and are used for many different applications. McShane's also carries weed fabric, staples, and other necessary supplies to cover all of your landscaping needs.  We look forward to helping you!

McShane's has the only Concrete Trailers for rent in Monterey County.  Come on in and let us help you out!

Adobe blocks are also available only at McShane's Landscape Supply.  Don't travel out of the county.  We have what you need!

February is a great time to mulch!  Get your landscape prepared for the upcoming rains, along with the spring planting season. Now is also a perfect time to add organic compost to build your soil. We have the best in the Central Coast, according to "soil master" Steve McShane.  Our blends are weed free and amazing!

Pond Department:

The Pond Department is offering our "Huge Winter Sale" on a number of products.  Winter is a great time to build, re-build and upgrade water features.  Our largest pond sale of the year is going on right now with most items at 20% off and our "Aquascape" Pond Kits at 50% off.

Continue to have a reduced fish feeding regimen.  When your water temperature drops below 65 degrees, the metabolism of your fish slows down. You should be feeding your fish just a couple of times a week. Stop feeding your fish completely when water temperatures fall below 50 degrees. If you don't have a thermometer for your pond, you need to purchase one.

Now is a great time for cleaning in and around your ponds and checking your equipment, if you haven't already done so.  Many of your  water plants will appear to be dead or dying, but they actually go dormant.  Give them a few more months to determine if they will come back or not.   How to Shop for Pond Plants

The pond department has moved locations!  It is now located in the Landscape Supply Trailer.  But, as always, our friendly staff is there to help!  Please call or stop by the nursery to talk to Jeramey about your fountain, pond projects, and pond care.
