Shamrock Plant with Pink Flowers 2

A Note From Steve McShane

Greetings Gardeners and Landscapers -

One of my absolute favorite times of the year is upon us.

This is when the Central Coast of California springs to life.  Soil warms and the magic juices in plants start to spur the development of flowers and edible treasures.  It also prompts us to spend more time outdoors and to start thinking about that fire pit or outdoor entertaining space.

My first piece of advice this month is to think about your soil.  Now is the time of year when you will want to add organic compost and fertilizer to existing beds.  The nutrients will become plant-available just in time for spring.  Gold Rush Planting Mix and Dr. Earth Organic Fertilizers are the highest quality amendments for these purposes.

As for your patios, consider Cal Stone Classic pavers or our Indian Autumn Flagstone.  I installed hundreds of square feet of both products at my home.   We can give you step by step instructions and a great price!

Finally - now is the perfect time to consider McShane's for design services for your home or landscape.  A life without a plan has no destination.  A garden without a plan goes under-utilized.  Through March, our design services are 20% off.

We appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you soon.

March Gardening Tips

Attract good bugs To keep insect pests under control in your vegetable garden, lure in their natural enemies -- hoverflies, lacewings, ladybugs, and parasitic wasps -- by planting the nectar plants they love, such as aster, chamomile, coreopsis, cosmos, feverfew, marigold, scabiosa, and yarrow.

Grow fruit trees Gardeners in Sunset climate zones 8-9 and 12-24 can all grow some kind of citrus and fruit trees, and March is the ideal time to plant. Check out our 2012 Fruit Tree List

Notes from Our Departments

Our roses and fruit trees are in and potted.  Now is the perfect time to plant both!  We have a huge selection and our staff can help you plant them.  Just ask!

Don't forget to protect the plants in your landscaping with gopher baskets or wire.  The Nursery Department sells gopher baskets, and our Landscape Supply sells gopher wire in two different roll sizes, perfect for any job!

Our Spring Bulbs are on sale.  When planted in this weather, they will burst with color in no time, and for many years to come.  But, don't forget to protect the bulbs with gopher wire, if that's a concern in your neighborhood!

This month's question is: How many blossoms does a hummingbird need to get its daily diet of nectar?

The rules of the game are simple.

We ask one trivia question a month. Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate. One winner per newsletter.
