A Note From Steve
January 2012

Greetings Gardeners & Landscapers,

Happy New Year !!!  2012 is here and with it comes plenty of great projects for your outdoor retreat.

While winter rains have been delayed a bit, they will be here before you  know it.  With them will come erosion and plenty of weeds.  It is not too late to install bark and mulch.

I'll also reference the importance of tending to your fruit trees and roses.  Every Saturday in January and February we have our "Winter Care Refresher" workshops for Roses at 10:30 AM and Fruit Trees at 1:30PM.  Join the experts on what to do during this most critical time of the year to ensure plenty of blooms and fruit.

Did I mention our fruit trees and roses have come in?  We have one of the largest selections on the Central Coast.

As winter is a good time for change, you'll notice a few changes out here at McShane's.  Just check out the inside of the greenhouse to discover what I'm talking about.  New retail displays are always exciting for customers.

McShane's is here to help you with your outdoor projects.  Our expertise is second to none and there is simply no other place where Landscape, Design and Nursery intersect.

We appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you in 2012!

Come check out our California Native plants. Consider using them in your landscape! California Natives are climate and location appropriate. They have taken thousands of years to adapt to the local environment. These plants evolve with the weather, soil, and microorganisms of California.  They typically are drought tolerant and water thrifty, along with being well suited to our soil and climates.  See our link above in Quick Links!

January Gardening Tips

Watch the local weather forecasts so you will know when you need to protect your frost tender plants such as Bougainvillea, Hibiscus, Citrus, and others.  When frost is predicted, be sure to cover your plants with frost cloth or burlap, both sold at McShane's.

Saturdays in January offer multiple classes here at McShane's.  Both Rose and Fruit Tree Pruning classes are offered every Saturday.  The Rose Pruning class is at 10:30 a.m. and the Fruit Tree Pruning is at 1:30 p.m.

Also, January and February are wonderful times to plant bulbs!  Our bulbs are in and ready to be planted...  Plant them now for great spring color.
Landscaping Department

Come talk to our knowledgeable landscaping department about all of your project needs. We carry sod, bricks, pavers, mulch and aggregate groundcovers, along with tools and cement trailers for all of your projects.  Our staff can help you determine what type of products you need. They also have the experience to work with you to decide how much material is needed for your project.

Come walk through our display area and look at all of the different products we carry!  Jose, John, or Oscar will be happy to help and answer your questions!

Pond Department
Winter is a perfect time to work on your pond maintenance. Some water plants and animals will become dormant which creates an ideal time to perform pond maintenance. McShane's has all of your pond care needs. We offer pond kits, pumps, liners, chemicals, plants, fish, and maintenance items.  Come talk to us about your pond.  Now is a great time to update!

January Trivia

Congratulations to last month's winner! They got the right answer of "The Poinsettia is not actually poisonous" to last month's question.

This month's question is:

That warm feeling from hot peppers is measured in units that honor the man who discovered the complicated way to measure the heat of peppers. What are the units that measure pepper heat?

The rules of the game are simple.

We ask one trivia question a month.  Please send all answers to sp@mcshanesnursery.com, with your full name. Prize: A $10 McShane's Gift Certificate.  One winner per newsletter.  The winner will be announced in McShane's next online newsletter.  Winner must bring an ID to the nursery to claim the prize.  Prize must be picked up in person with in 2 weeks.  Employees are not eligible for this contest.

Have fun and good luck!
