A Note From Steve McShane Pink
Greetings Fellow Gardeners!!!

Fall is officially in full swing and with it comes some fantastic opportunities to begin planning for next seasons' crop of flowers and edible fruits, veggies and herbs.  You see, I always tell people, "feed your soil and your soil will feed your plants."  The fall could not be a better time to start the process.  Here along the Central Coast. soil temperatures are high enough that microbial activity stays active the entire year.  By adding nutrients now, you're preparing for next spring.

If amending in bulk, I highly recommend our 50/50 soil blend.  It contains a rich combination of high grade top soil and organic compost.  You may also consider bagged amendment.  One of my favorites is called "Black Forest." it comes in a 3 cubic foot bale and is loaded with nutrients.  I'd further recommend adding an organic fertilizer.  An "all-purpose" like Dr. Earth will pay off in a huge way by providing hard working microbes that make nutrients available to plants.

It is also worth mentioning the importance of fall landscaping responsibilities.  The rains are not far away and as a result, folks will need to consider barks and mulches to keep weeds under control.  Not only do we deliver, but we will spread mulches for you.  Simply call our dispatch department at
I thank my lucky stars daily for the many blessings we have living here along the Central Coast.  I thank you for your business during such a tough economy and wish you a fantastic October!

Sincerely,

Steve McShane

OCTOBER GARDENING TIPS
  • Now is the time to start taking action for a fall harvest, so think about greens and root vegetables.
  • The wind and varying climates along the Central Coast makes the irrigation schedule different for almost everyone's garden.
  • The NCDC indicates that Salinas almost enjoys the whole year without frost. Predicted freeze/frost dates are few scattered throughout November and December.

Notes from Our Departments
Nursery Department:
Although the Central Coast is coming into the Fall season the weather could not be better most days this time of year. Because of the coastal weather some would say that one could almost grow anything year round.  For example, there are tomatoes here at McShane's that are prefect for growing in the winter and beautiful plants of all kinds that stay alive and blooming year round. The people here at McShane's Nursery are always questioning which plants survive the best here in the Central Coast climate before they order any plants.Iceberg Roses
October is here and so are the pumpkins and cornstalks. Cornstalks are of course perfect for Halloween decorations all the way into Thanksgiving, but pumpkins can now be used through Christmas! A new decoration fad is here and perhaps here to stay using pumpkins in all sorts of events other than the traditional holidays. By spray painting the pumpkins a festive color, using glitter, and any other creative ideas you can think of pumpkins can then be an affordable decoration for holidays and events.
The Nursery will be ready for Christmas rest assured. Christmas trees, wreathes, garlands, and poinsettias orders are locked in for the Christmas season. These will be available the week of Thanksgiving. Please feel free to call the Nursery to confirm these items are in.

In other news: Iceberg roses are in!
Landscape Supply:

The Landscape Supply department is very knowledge about materials and how to get what you are looking for. If you have any questions about landscaping material please give them a call.

The Landscape Supply is proud to have adobe bricks in stock. This building material is definitely time tested from ancient times to the present. Although this is an old fashion material, this brick can be used in a manner that reflects modern styles and uses. Get creative with materials!

The Landscape supply has DG and TechniSoil, which is a liquid that helps to stabilize soil. The product is used by homeowners and in industrial situations alike to help the ground surfaces to handle water, stop dust, and handle daily use better. The application is easy and similar to what you would do to spray weeds. For more information about this product please visit the landscape department or give them a call.

Po
Fountainnd Department:
The Pond Department as most people know handles the foundations, statues, and irrigation equipment along with the pond supplies. A sale on select fountains will be happening in October in which they will be 10 to 40% off.
The 50% off sale on MicroPond and MicroPondless kits continues! These are great deals for anyone with a pond or without one. Also the pond master kits are still 40% off! Do not let these deals pass you up!

Thank you Rusty Hammersmith for years of great pond department management! Everyone at McShane's will miss you! We would now like to welcome and announce Jeramey McCaffery. He will be taking over the department for Rusty here at McShane's Nursery!

Design Department:
This year McShane's gifted interior designers (Cinda Steen and Bates Hinds) will be available for Christmas tree decorating. The fee would be $80.00 an hour for one or $150 for the team plus materials. Both designers are highly experienced and fun to work with.
