Aug. News. Header
A Note From Steve mcShane!

Greetings Gardeners !!!!

August could not be more of an exciting month here along the Central Coast.  Thanks to our fantastic climate, we still have the pleasure of many more months of nice weather.

For those of you engaged in heavy flower - power, don't forget to feed!  A nice Organic fertilizer applied to roses and summer annuals will give them "umph" for their fall show.  In the next few weeks, some folks may even start applying epsom salts to their roses.

I'd also recommend some investment in your soil.  Fall is the critical time of year for root development.  Feeding your soil with some organic amendment like our Black Forest or Gold Rush products will start the soil working to deliver nutrients to plants just in time for their need to store nutrients for winter.

In the last few weeks, we've brought in loads of extra plants for our 25% off Plant sale.  Come check it out.  Roses are still on sale as well.  August brings our "Buy two, get one free" special.  Finally - consider our super-clean Red Wood Chips to dress up any patio or landscape.  Only $38.99 a yard.  We'll deliver too.

Finally - I'd like to personally invite you to visit the fantastic display of gifts and plants in our greenhouse.  We recently added Bates Hinds to our staff.  Bates has years of experience in floral and interior design.  Paired with Interior Designer, Cinda Steen, the selection is amazing!  We wrap and create gift baskets too.

Here's to the fantastic opportunity to beautify and your interior and exterior environments during August!

Sincerely,

Steve McShane

AUGUST GARDENING TIPS
  • Sample fruits this month to get a "taste" of what fruit you would like to grow in your garden while so many fruits are in season.
  • Start root vegetable seeds for fall and winter harvesting like beets, carrots, and potatoes.
  • Water and fertilize annuals often to keep them blooming through to the end of summer.

Notes from Our Departments

Nursery Department: Here at McShane's Nursery we want to have great classes and information available to help you garden successfully.

So, McShane's isRose with Boarder excited to announce that new gardening books are in! Everything from Bonsai tree manuals to organic gardening guides are available for you to take home to have as a handy guide or relaxing read. Select plants (including roses) are still 25% off. They are marked by green flags and there is a list available at the nursery entrance.

Landscape Department: The landscape supply department is always ready to help you figure out the right ground cover for you. They also carry tools, sod, and rocks of many different sizes, textures, and color.Rock

Hauling away these wonderful items for your landscape can some times require a certain type of vehicle (most likely a truck) and a certain size vehicle. So, please consider the amount of weight your vehicle can handle. The landscape supply can help you determine the amount of Rock 1material suitable to haul in your vehicle. Please be aware the landscape supply wants customers and everyone else on the road to be safe. If you do not have the correct vehicle for the type of job you would like to do the landscape supply can deliver for a fee.

Pond Department: New Water LilyThe pond department just received new beautiful one gallon water plants! New plants are always good news and welcome stock, but Rusty (our pond department leader) has cleared some pond department shelves for Dig Irrigation supplies! Now McShane's has drip irrigation supplies for homeowners. You'll be amazed by what Dig Irrigation products have done to make their products reliable and easier to use then ever. Design Department: The design department welcomed a new member to the team: Bates Heins. He is doing a great job building up the green house gift shop and he is knowledgeable about plants. Welcome Bates!

As always McShane's wants to keep the interior design survey available for you. Click this link to the survey: The Design Survey
