Gophers are one of most dreaded creatures for folks trying to grow vegetables or even maintain a nice looking lawn and

landscape.

Gophers are most active in the spring and fall.  The most popular way of controlling gophers is with the use of a deterrent.  By far the most effective deterrent is Mole Max. It simply drives the critters away.

Trapping is another method to control gophers.

The trap I recommend with best results is the Macabe Trap.  It has been proven for years. Once your trap is in place, cover any hole or exposed area with leaves, a board or a cloth sack to darken the trap area. The lack of light makes the gopher travel towards the trap. After trapping a gopher, dispose of the gopher into the tunnel and cover hole. This will discourage future use of the area by other gophers.

Controlling gophers here along the Central Coast is easier than you'd think.

With a little understanding of the right method for your landscape, you'll enjoy a pest free retreat and garden.  As always, McShane's is here to help you.

Here is to a healthy, gopher free garden!

Start buying tomato seedlings in mid to late March.  Mid-March is the perfect time to plant those tomatoes! We recommend using Mycorrhiza on all of your tomato plants!

Start an herb garden!!  Plant chives, parsley, rosemary, sage, savory, tarragon, and thyme.

To keep your blue-flowered hydrangea blue, add aluminum sulfate. We love Hydra Blue which is an excellent source of aluminum sulfate.
dr earth
It is time to start feeding  your plants!  Almost all plants appreciate a boost! We  recommend Dr. Earth for a great organic fertilizer!

Apply deer and rabbit repellent so your flowers and plants are safe! We swear by the all-natural Liquid Fence or Repels All deterrents.

Manage snails and slugs.  Control the snails now and  reduce numbers for the rest of the year. Locate their daytime hiding places and put out some Sluggo.  Sluggo is people and pet safe and GREAT for your garden!

This vegetable was originally thought to be poisonous. It was brought into acceptance on September 26, 1820 when Colonel Robert G. Johnson ate an entire basket full of them, sitting on the courthouse steps in Salem, New Jersey. The assembled crowd expected to see him drop dead, but when he remained healthy, this veggie won it's spot as one of America's favorites!
